Dr. Debbie Rhea, professor of kinesiology and director of the LiiNK Center for Healthy Play, has been awarded the 2025 Joe L. Frost Award for Distinguished Research by the U.S. Play Coalition.

This national award honors a career of exceptional research that has advanced the study of play—and we couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient. Dr. Rhea’s work through LiiNK has reshaped how we think about education, health, and the importance of play in developing the whole child.

Fun fact: The award is named after Joe L. Frost, known as the contemporary father of play advocacy—so this is truly a legacy moment.

Congratulations to Vicki Brooks, director of advanced practice registered nurse programs and associate professor of professional practice in nursing, who was elected as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners liaison for the state of Texas. Selected by members, these exemplary nurse practitioner leaders will set the strategic direction for the association and play an instrumental role in guiding the profession forward. The AANP represents the interests of the more than 431,000 licensed nurse practitioners in the U.S., providing legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels.

A big shoutout to our very own Jackie Rowles, the director of the Advanced Pain Management Fellowship and associate professor of professional practice! 🎉 Jackie received well-deserved recognition for her substantial contributions to The Global Anesthesia Workforce Survey. Her award-winning research, acknowledged by Anesthesia & Analgesia, reveals significant workforce shortages that hinder access to crucial and emergency surgical care across the globe.

With a staggering 5 billion people without prompt access to surgical care, Jackie stresses the utmost importance of anesthesia as a deciding factor. According to her, the key to overcoming this massive hurdle lies in strengthening workforce development. “We need to unite our forces to confirm the current workforce status accurately and leverage this information in advocating for government funding towards anesthesia education. Nurse anesthetists can be instrumental in covering this gap,” Jackie wisely suggests.
