Yarrow First-Hartling is a senior at Shepherd University in Shepherds town, West Virginia, who will be graduating in the spring of 2011. She is looking to become a teacher in the DC metro area. Yarrow has wanted to be a teacher for a long time. In high school, her art teacher, Nancy Blank, selected her to be mentored and guide her during her senior year. She was able to teach the ceramics section

to the freshmen during their Introduction to Art class. Blank taught her how to make a lesson plan and run a class and how to grade a project as well. Yarrow comes from a family of teachers. Her father is a teacher of world religions at a Catholic school in New Jersey, while her mother, a social worker and expressive arts therapist, has taught art, music, and theater to children with mental illnesses, with which Yarrow assisted. It was during that time that she decided that she wanted to be a teacher. She fell in love with art and history and world culture, and has traveled to Mexico to visit ancient Mayan cities, France to view classical art, and England and Scotland to view ancient Celtic ruins and castles. Yarrow has experience with children with special needs. She herself has ADHD and has learned to overcome it. She has experience in 504 plans and IEPs, and knows how to work with the system for special needs children. In addition, a member of her family has autism, and she has several year's experience caring for his needs, including dietary needs. At Shepherd, Yarrow has focused her studies on art, education, and psychology, and has taken coursework in religion and history as well. After graduating, she hopes to become a teacher of any grade level.
