On May 30, Glendale Community College (GCC) celebrated nearly 500 students at our annual Honors & Awards banquet, awarding close to $300,000 in scholarships! Among the standout recipients were Taron Hakobyan and Carissa Coane, each of whom received the prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The Cooke Scholarship offers students the opportunity to complete their undergraduate education with minimal debt, providing each recipient up to $55,000 per year for up to three years to finish their bachelor’s degree.

Out of 1,600 applicants nationwide, they were among just 90 finalists selected for the 2025 cohort—an incredible achievement!

Taron, a computer science major, shared, “What drew me to GCC was its beautiful campus. What really confirmed I was in the right place, though, was the incredibly supportive and resourceful staff, along with the knowledgeable professors. They made it clear that my academic goals aren't just possible here—they’re fully within reach."

Carissa, who plans to earn bachelor’s degrees in both communications and journalism, added, “This scholarship will allow me to focus solely on my studies, without the burden of financial stress. I am also excited to join the Scholars community and connect with other students like me.”

An important part of this entire process is Aida Avanousian, GCC’s Scholarship Office Manager, whose outstanding work and invaluable guidance in helping students navigate the application process are being recognized by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Reflecting on her role, Aida says, "Being able to work with and ultimately help students achieve their academic goals has been incredibly rewarding for me. Witnessing the positive outcomes of our collaboration makes the effort truly worthwhile."

Please join us in congratulating Taron, Carissa, and Aida on these remarkable accomplishments!

On the evening of April 22, GCC's Armenian Student Association, in collaboration with ASGCC, held a candle-lighting ceremony to honor and remember the 1.5 million lives lost during the Armenian Genocide 110 years ago.

This day of remembrance serves not only to acknowledge a profound historical tragedy but also to offer an opportunity for reflection, healing, and solidarity.

As we continue to reflect on this history, please note that Glendale Community College will be closed on April 24 in observance of the Armenian Genocide.
