πŸš€ Our incoming freshmen rocked the Bridge to STEM Summer Program! They teamed up with , faculty, Learning Assistants, and Peer Academic Coaches over the past week to create challenging online escape rooms using college level math! πŸ€”πŸ’‘ Check out the pics - they had a blast!

They wrapped up by presenting their hard work at a player event! It was so much fun watching everyone try to solve the games.

This program is all about setting our STEM students up for success at CSU East Bay. From enhancing math and communication skills to gaining confidence navigating campus resources, these students are ready to hit the ground running.

πŸŒŸπŸŽ‰ Exciting news alert! πŸŽ‰πŸŒŸ The Cal State East Bay Center for Disability Justice Research: Health Equity, Education, and Creativity announced that our campus has been awarded a grant from the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities to support implementation of Supported Decision Making (SDM) across our state.

SDM is a less restrictive alternative to conservatorship that allows people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) to retain their adult rights.

The Cal State East Bay Supported Decision-Making Professional Development Project is partnering with the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) on this project, which includes conducting outreach and developing educational products for professionals to increase their knowledge and application of SDM.

Congratulations πŸ‘πŸ‘ to Dr. Rachel Torres, Assistant Professor in Nursing (PI) and Dr. Talya Kemper, Associate Professor in Teacher Education (Co-PI) as well as Key Senior Faculty Dr. Sara McDaniel, Assistant Professor in Special Education, Dr. Sarah Taylor, Professor and Department Chair in Social Work, and Dr. Shubha Kashinath, Professor in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

πŸŽ‰ Happy Juneteenth or Freedom Day from the College of Science! πŸŽ‰ Just a reminder that the University will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th to honor this important day in history.

Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for freedom and equality. Let's take this time to reflect on our past, celebrate our progress, and continue working towards a better future for all.

🌟 Huge congratulations to Yi Shen Lee ! Yi Shen Lee is a first year MS Biology student pursuing research in the Sitaraman lab and won the second prize at the CSU wise research competition. She is tackling the sensory, central processing and motor circuits involved in simple decision making behaviors like egg laying in fruit flies. To this end she is using cutting edge genetic, connectomic and behavioral analysis. This project is funded by an NIH R15 award to the Sitaraman lab and CSR scholarship to Yi Shen. Yi Shen hopes by understanding the circuit basis of decision making which is based on the value of choices and consequences of actions she will learn more about how we make decisions. She is working in close collaboration with fellow masters student Namrata Dhungana and both women in stem believe that there is no project better than studying female decision making. Yi Shen Lee is planning to graduate in June 2025 and pursue a PhD program in Neuroscience.

Special shoutout to Dr. Divya Sitaraman for her amazing mentorship.

Keep shining bright, Yi Shen! ✨

πŸŽ‰ Huge congratulations to Preeti Sundaramurthi !

Preeti Sundaramurthi won the first prize for her research on neural circuits underlying sleep and arousal. This project was conducted in the lab of Dr. Divya Sitaraman in close collaboration with Dr. Gerald Rubin at Janelia Research Campus, HHMI. Additional funding for this project came from NSF CAREER award to the Sitaraman lab and CSR and CSU Biotech award to Preeti. Sleep and wake regulation are conserved across species and using a combination of genetic, physiological and behavioral approaches, Preeti is decoding how sleep drive is regulated at the level of single synapses. Preeti is a final year Masters student and is defending her thesis in June and plans to pursue a PhD program in biomedical sciences next year. After graduation she will stay in the Sitaraman lab as a staff researcher to complete her fascinating project on sleep and wake circuits.

Great job Preeti !

πŸ† So proud of Lu for presenting her groundbreaking NIH-funded research on pain relief at the CSU-wide Research Competition Cal Poly San Luis Obispo!

Lu presented her NIH-funded project titled "Simultaneous inhibition of sEH and FAAH alleviates inflammatory pain in rats”

She demonstrated that a novel drug synthesized by the Pecic Lab at Cal State Fullerton produces pain relief at a dose that is 300x smaller than traditional treatments such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Lu was mentored by Dr. Ram Kandasamy, Psychology.

Congratulations on your well-deserved first place win!
