It's all about research! 🔎 The College of Science is home to exciting discoveries.

Ram Kandasamy () attended the 36th Annual CSU Biotechnology Symposium in Santa Clara, CA with his research assistants Daniel Carr, Tiffany Chacon (), Siena Gunari (), Monijeh Khoja (), and Stephanie Sanchez (.stephieee).

They presented their research findings on the “Effect of simultaneous inhibition of fatty acid amide hydrolase and soluble epoxide hydrolase on migraine pain in rats” and “Simultaneous inhibition of fatty acid amide hydrolase and soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibits acute inflammatory pain in rats." 🐀

The students also explored enlightening research during poster sessions, engaged in short talks from faculty, and connected with fellow CSU students and faculty.

We're cultivating a greener future in the College of Science! 🪴 In the Green Biome Institute, we're not just studying plants, we're growing tomorrow's eco-warriors. 🌱🔬 The university's new molecular research lab, is focused on the conservation of these plants utilizing several omics profiling techniques along with seed and tissue banking. We're on a quest to conserve Earth's precious flora. Proudly the first in the CSU/UC system, our molecular research lab is where ambition meets action. 💚 Kudos to our dedicated students, William and Alysa, for unlocking the secrets in every strand of DNA. Join us as we plant the seeds for a sustainable tomorrow! 🧬🌍

This past summer, Dr. Derek Jackson Kimball and some physics students went camping to discover the universe's secrets. It is called the "Search for Non-Interacting Particles Experimental Hunt" (SNIPE Hunt).

To search for higher mass dark matter fields, they built a specialized apparatus and went far away from human-generated noise sources, made dark matter sensors, and went camping! They coordinated with colleagues from other undergraduate institutions (Prof. Jason Stalnaker's group from Oberlin College, Prof. Ibrahim Sulai's group from Bucknell University, and Prof. Abaz Kryemadhi from Messiah University), and they all went camping at different locations at the same time to measure the dark matter field distribution over the Earth.

The results of that experiment to Physical Review D. Read it here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.11575

Dr. Derek Jaskson Kimball says, "It was a real challenge, and we learned a lot, as there were electronics issues that needed repair in the field, it was over 100 degrees in the afternoons, and we needed to position a set of relatively heavy equipment at high elevations which required some hiking."

Adventure-seekers beware! 🚨This strange creature of the night may look beautiful but can release toxins if feeling threatened ⚠️The Californian millipede (Motyxia sequoiae) releases hydrogen cyanide when scared and actually glows fluorescent and bioluminescent - making it a truly unique sight to behold 🤩

These blind animals glow as an aposematic signal, warning nocturnal predators that they are dangerous. The animal in the picture was collected by Dr. Douglas Mendel Soares (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil), a visiting scholar at Dr. Brian Perry’s lab (Department of Biology, CSUEB). In collaboration with Dr. Cassius Stevani (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Dr. Paul Marek (Virginia Tech, US), this research aims to describe the mechanism and the biochemical components of this new bioluminescent system found in nature.
