Hutchinson Community College-Livestock Judging

Hutchinson Community College-Livestock Judging Academics are a strong component of the program and our students are committed to a certain level of scholastic achievement.
(15)

The livestock judging program at Hutchinson Community College offers a unique experience giving students a chance to develop their livestock selection abilities while traveling the country to some of the industry’s elite operations. Through this rigorous learning process, students can expect to familiarize themselves with the tools it takes to visually appraise livestock and develop an understandi

ng of performance records relevant to the industry and the management of one’s personal operation. Additionally, the diverse skill set and a network of contacts established through a student’s time on this competitive team will prove to increase their marketability to potential employers upon graduation. With the quality of education and the support of the instructors, students can feel comfortable leaving HCC academically prepared for the transition into a four year university. Hutchinson Community College’s central location in Hutchinson, Kansas is ideal for a traveling judging team. We are in close proximity to some of the country’s premiere breeders, a reasonable distance from the contests attended, and minutes away from the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team brought home a national championship from the All East meat animal contest hosted by Mississippi State University last week. This was the inaugural event for junior colleges to compete in this type of contest in a competitive setting and we are thankful to the organizers of the All East contest for stepping up and finally including junior colleges. Not only were the Blue Dragons the high-ranking junior college team, but they outscored every university team in the overall contest, including two out of three of the separate days. Eight freshmen students in the Ag108 course have been preparing since the spring semester began in January to attend this contest, in addition to three sophomore students on the livestock judging team that took the class last year. This is an all-encompassing event that took three days to compete in. Thursday was market animal evaluation (live calls), Friday breeding animal selection with questions on each class, and Saturday a 12 and 8 judging contest. In addition to their win at All East, our students were the high placing junior college team by nearly 300 points at the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest back in March hosted by the University of Illinois, and ranked ahead of all universities there as well in the breeding animal selection contest. The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team is coached by Kane Austin and assisted by Kami McComb and Will Banks.

The trip to Houston started with a quick jog to Montgomery, AL for the Southeastern Livestock Expo contest earlier this week. Special thanks to the Auburn University, Alabama Cattlemen’s, and SLE crews on continuously making the event better and better each year. Also special thanks to the Alldredge family for feeding us Wednesday night.

The Sophomores and Freshmen teams took home champion and reserve teams in all divisions, with numerous individual accolades. Check out the full results here.

The sophomores are making their final preparations to round out the season Monday in Houston.

Always a fun trip south to the Dixie National for warmer weather, new scenery, and a great cattle contest consisting of the first chance to see eared cattle and slick steers for many of the crew.

Thank you to Alex Pittman and the rest of the people that put on a great event.

Thank you to Draggin’ M Ranch and Grady Green for an awesome practice opportunity in southern Arkansas on the way down.

We are excited to announce “Connection Week” coming up later this year at Hutchinson Community College. The students in the sales management class are preparing the annual online sale set for Tuesday December 5th hosted on SC. Friday December 8th, we’ll welcome hundreds of 4-H and FFA members to the “Winter Classic” youth livestock judging contest held at the Bar K Bar arena in Lyons, KS. (This event will take the place of the usual Kansas Beef Expo event in Hutch).

The new events we are thrilled to announce will take place Saturday December 9th. It will be alumni day for all past Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team members. We will host an “old-timers” judging contest at the HCC school farm on south campus. Come relive the glory days and compete in good fun against other alumni. The nightcap will feature the first ever Alumni Banquet which will be held at the state fairgrounds. Social hour, dinner, and recognition of 5, 10, and 20 year teams will occur, in addition to several other fun activities.
