Mary Kawena Pukui was a Hawaiian scholar and researcher. Some of her works include The Polynesian Family System in Kaʻū, Nānā i ke Kumu, the Hawaiian-English Dictionary, and many more that we continue to use today. This year, it was announced that she will be the face of the 2025 Native American $1 coin.

The quote that we share is from her recollection of stories of ʻEwa, referring to the shark ʻaumākua of Puʻuloa. The people of ʻEwa made sure to mālama the sharks as if they were aliʻi and because of this relationship, the sharks of Puʻuloa never attacked humans.

Patsy Mink was a Hawaiʻi representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to her political career, she applied to medical school and was rejected, simply for being a woman. This experience shaped her initiatives in the U.S. Congress and she helped to pass Title IX and the Women's Educational Equity Act, both of which prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender.

Walter Payton was a nine-time Pro Bowl running back who played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears including during their 1985 SuperBowl win. Payton was diagnosed with a rare liver disease and passed away in 1999 though his legacy lives on through the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation and the NFL's Walter Payton Award, given to a player with outstanding community service.

Wilma Rudolph was an Olympic athlete in track and field. In spite of childhood illnesses like polio and pneumonia, she went on to THREE gold medals in track and field during the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Rudolph was the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Game, launching her into fame and recognition.

DYK that between 1880 and 1887, 18 Hawaiians were selected by the Hawaiian Kingdom government to study abroad? The program was revived in 2018 by and retraced our kūpuna’s steps, culminating in this exhibit featuring what students found. Come see it now thru March 7 on the first floor!
