Recent Kennesaw State University graduate Megan McGabe (Biology, ’24) hopes to bring her passion for science to medical school this fall. After switching from a nursing major to biology, she discovered her enthusiasm for research while working in Dr. Dongyu Jia’s lab, where she studied a human proto-oncogene associated with ovarian and nerve-related cancers. Within the past year alone, Megan has participated in the Birla Carbon Scholars Program, placed third in the Fall 2024 Symposium of Student Scholars, and is now compiling her research findings for potential publication in a scholarly journal.

Congratulations to Dr. Todd Pierson on the publication of his paper, “A Genetic Polymorphism Underlying Alternative Reproductive Tactics in Eurycea Salamanders” in the Molecular Ecology journal! Master of Science in Integrative Biology student Yatin Kalki is also a featured author on this paper.

Alternative reproductive tactics are discrete, intrasexual differences in reproductive behaviour within a population. In some cases, these complex phenotypes are determined by autosomal supergenes or...

Biology major Olivia Walker grew up with a love of hiking in the woods, not realizing she might be among an endangered species of trees she would one day research at Kennesaw State University. After arriving at KSU, her strong interest in nature led her to the First-Year Scholars Program to study longleaf pine forest ecosystems with biology professor Paula Jackson. Now in her junior year, Olivia has learned how soils support endangered trees by analyzing samples gathered in the field.

Congratulations to Dr. Paula Jackson (EEOB) for the publication of the “Insights on Rooting Depths for Woody Species of the Barro Colorado Nature Monument” chapter inside The First 100 Years of Research on Barro Colorado: Plant and Ecosystem Science book by the Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press!

Read the chapter below.

Root of woody plants are difficult to investigate because they make up extensive networks into the soil. Recent methods, including stable isotopes, hydraulic traits, and DNA protocols combined with standard methods and irrigation and fertilization experiments, have provided insight into root dynamic...

Master of Science in Integrative Biology student Kerrigan Larkin discovered her love for plants and animals at a young age during walks in a local park with her grandmother. Her passion for animals grew throughout grade school, inspiring her to major in biology at Kennesaw State University and conduct research under biology professor Thomas McElroy. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2023, Kerrigan continued her studies in the MSIB program to focus on her research on the effects of urbanization on bat populations.

Our Story

The Kennesaw State University Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology use a contemporary, hands-on approach to the life sciences and understanding its role in society. The study of biological science provides students with the opportunity of specialized degree tracks in coursework for a comprehensive program in natural or life sciences.

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (https://csm.kennesaw.edu/eeob) uses advance knowledge in the fields of evolution, organismal biology, ecology and environmental science to provide students with critical thinking skills needed to address current and future challenges. Graduates will leave their programs with the skills to enter the workforce or graduate programs and make meaningful contributions in their fields.

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (https://csm.kennesaw.edu/mcb) unites a diverse and dynamic body of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to understanding molecular interactions and their outcomes across many scales, from the single-celled to the collective organization of multicellular organisms. The department aims to position our students as the next generation of scientists, health professionals, educators, and enlightened citizens while promoting faculty and staff success.
