Motivated by the love and justice of Jesus Christ, graduates of Cairn’s social work programs intervene in the lives of those in need—counseling individuals, locating resources, facilitating groups, and promoting change within organizations and communities. The world needs spiritually and professionally qualified individuals, characterized by grace and compassion, who provide competent intervention

s that change lives. For students interested in helping others, Cairn’s social work programs are essential preparation for both graduate study and employment in social services. Historically rooted in Christianity, social work pursues the well-being of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Determined through relationship with those served, interventions include counseling, resource acquisition, policy development, community organization, advocacy, research, and education. An interdisciplinary professional and academic field, social work applies the theories of psychology, economics, science, and philosophy to meet people’s physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. Becca Rissler is a social work major from East Earl, PA.

- What do you plan on pursuing after graduation?

"I plan on pursuing a job in the field of social work and eventually going for my master’s in social work."

- What is one thing you learned at Cairn that made an impact on you?

"One thing that I’ve learned is that you can’t go through college on your own. It takes a group of people supporting you along the way. I’m so thankful for those who have mentored me over the last four years of school, including my professors, who have truly made an impact on my life."

- What advice would you give to current or incoming students?

"Make the most out for the relationships with people during your time at Cairn. Both with other students and professors. Be intentional with getting to know your professors, because they have a lot of wisdom to share with you!"

"My fondest Cairn memory was traveling with other students. In my freshman year, I was part of the Urban Ministry first year program where we went to Egypt and South Africa. I was able to go back to Egypt the next year on a mission trip with other Cairn students. We went to WellSpring camp and got to be part of the ministry that is happening there."

"One thing I learned at Cairn was that friendships don't happen on their own, it takes intentionality. Class and work schedules can change so much from one semester to the next. If my schedule lined up really well with a friend one semester, and then not at all the next, we really had to be intentional about making time for each other."

"I would say completing my degree is what I'm most proud of. Completing two internships for the social work program in the last year during the pandemic was difficult, so now that I am on the other side of it all, I am very grateful that I was able to finish."

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?
"The Spring semester of every year always seems to fly by. Take time to be present and enjoy the experience. Say yes to as many opportunities as possible. And don't underestimate the power of a planner."

It is bittersweet to announce that Dr. Tyler has decided to retire at the end of this semester. She has been a faithful faculty member and friend since 1983. We wanted to give you an opportunity to process this decision and recognize the impact she has had in your life. Feel free to contact her directly and thank her, or share about her to others in-person and online. She will be missed. We pray for God’s blessings on her and her family in this new chapter she is about to embark on.

"Cairn offered me the opportunity to explore my faith and to consider how to integrate my faith into my career. Studying the Bible alongside social work helped to prepare me to love people with the truth according to God’s Word as my standard for right and wrong and to understand and consider people’s spiritual needs while caring for their physical, material, and psychological needs."

"I looked at a lot of social work programs, but when I came to Cairn and heard Dr. Gestoso speak—whoa. It was clear that he really cares about social work and he approaches it from a biblical perspective, which is something that I really wanted in a BSW program. I’m not really sure where I want to go with social work yet because there’s so many different things that you can do. But I feel so equipped to go forward. I will be starting my first placement next semester, and I’m really excited because I know I will learn so much through that experience. "
