The Lansing Community College Foundation is dedicated to supporting students by providing life changing scholarships. Yesterday LCC Foundation celebrated the scholarships awarded to students at an amazing breakfast event at the Kellogg Center. The event featured awesome speakers, including a great speech by LCC AMA President Katie Globl. That's Katie and I in the 1st pic. Two thankful scholarship recipients.

It’s always inspiring to see mentors who sparked your interest in certain fields. I’m glad to have had the chance to see my mentor, Bill Motz, the man who ignited my interest in social media digital content creation at the breakfast. A couple of years ago Bill said "George, I want you in LCC AMA." Who was I to argue with the Great Mr. Motz? Thank you sir.

National Hispanic Month is a celebration of the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States.Ā It is observed from September 15 to October 15.Ā September 15 is the anniversary of the ā€œGrito de Doloresā€ or the Cry of Dolores. The Grito marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence in 1821. The day alsoĀ coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Chile, and Belize.

The month-long commemoration honors the diversity and richness of Hispanic and Latino heritage, as well as their achievements in various fields, such as art, music, literature, science, politics, and sports

FIRST BLACK OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS

At the London Summer Olympics in 1908, John Baxter Taylor, a Penn State graduate, became the first African AmericanĀ to win a gold in the Olympics 1600-meter relay race.

At 1948 Summer Olympics in London, Alice CoachmanĀ became the first Black womanĀ in the world to win an Olympic gold medal while competing in the high jump. Up to that point, no American woman had taken the gold medal in any of the competitions. Alice Coachman changed that byĀ soaring an unprecedented 5 feet, 6 1/8 inches in the high jump at the London Games.

Thomas Jennings (1791–Feb. 12, 1856), a free-born African American and New Yorker who became a leader of the abolitionist movement, made his fortune as the inventor of a dry-cleaning process called ā€œdry scouring.ā€ Jennings was 30 years old when he received his patent on March 3, 1821 (U.S. patent 3306x), becoming the first African American inventor to own the rights to his invention.

Jennings began experimenting with different solutions and cleaning agents. He tested them on various fabrics until he found the right combination to treat and clean them. He called his method ā€œdry-scouring,ā€ a process now known as dry cleaning.

Jennings spent the first money he earned from his patent on legal fees to buy his family out of enslavement. After that, most of his income went to his abolitionist activities.

Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent, after Asia in both cases. At about 11.7 million mi² including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area. The second most populated continent with more than a billion people.

Africa stretches across four hemispheres, surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. There are 54 countries recognized by the United Nations. Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 tropical islands located in the Indian Ocean, is the smallest country in Africa, 174 square miles. Algeria is 919,595 square miles and is the largest country in Africa.

It's estimated that between 1,200 to 2,100 languages are spoken in Africa. Others say it's close to 3,000. More than 500 different languages are spoken in Nigeria.

There is no precise number of ethnicities in Africa. But based on the number of different dialects, we conclude they're over a thousand diverse cultures. The 5 major ethnic groups are:

1. Maghrebis
2. Egyptians
3. Hausa
4. Yoruba
5. Oromo
