Since 2016, 73 students from three California prisons have earned their degrees, including Edwin Cruz, who shares his powerful story of transformation and hope.

As we continue to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we honor Lt. Susan Ahn Cuddy (1915–2015)—the first Asian American woman in the U.S. Navy and the Navy’s first female gunnery officer. She trained pilots in aerial gunnery during WWII and served as a code breaker for Naval Intelligence and the NSA. A powerful example of leadership and resilience.

We’re kicking off this celebration by spotlighting alumna Mylen Yamamoto—a Hawaii-born entrepreneur, educator, and founder of Cropsticks, the sustainable chopsticks brand featured on Shark Tank and now used by Disney and Walgreens. As a former professor at Cal State LA, Mylen’s story is a testament to the power of innovation, identity, and impact.
