Article II Section 2 of the US Constitution grants the US President the power to issue pardons. The power was first used in 1795 by George Washington to pardon Whiskey Rebellion participants and last used by Donald Trump in 2025 to pardon January 6 insurrectionists. Although pardons are often controversial, with more than 20,000 acts of executive clemency, they are not rare.

Join CPF for a conversation with bestselling author and CNN Chief Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin about presidential pardons and his brand new book “The Pardon: The Politics of Presidential Mercy.” CPF Director Bob Shrum leads this discussion about famous pardons throughout history and the latest pardons from Presidents Biden and Trump. Plus they will answer your questions about pardons.

The USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future hosts its annual Warschaw Conference on Practical Politics on January 30, 2025 in Town & Gown at USC. We honored to join with POLITICO and PBS’ "Firing Line with Margaret Hoover" to bring together top experts from politics, government, media, and academia to explore the most pressing issues in America’s political landscape. Our panels will explore themes relevant to the 2024 election, including Trump's historic comeback, why Democrats underperformed, how young people see the political future, and what to expect in the second Trump presidency.

This year’s theme is “The Trumping of America: Why and What's Next?” Join us in person, on Zoom, or on Facebook Thursday January 30 from 9:00am to 4:30pm. You won’t want to miss this incredible lineup of political VIPs.

This year's panels include:
10:00 a.m. The Honchos Speak - Firing Line w/ Margaret Hoover
11:00 a.m. Trump's Historic Comeback
12:40 p.m. Fight On for the Political Future with USC Students
1:00 p.m. How Democrats Lost The Plot
2:20 p.m. "The Future Lies Ahead": The Impact of the Second Trump Presidency
