Last Monday, UCLA's new Berry Gordy Music Industry Center invited three of Motown's most essential women: Brenda Boyce, Suzanne de Passe, and Carol Perrin to our Music Industry 1 class to engage in an open dialogue with students about Berry Gordy's legacy. All three guests have spent years working within the Motown ecosystem and working closely with its founder.

Students learned about Gordy's upbringing, work ethic, and values that allowed for him to create a musical empire, and they received advice on how they could implement those practices into their lives to foster long-lasting legacies in the industry.

This time last year, MI Student Katie Simpson had the opportunity to go to a masterclass by Jacob Collier. In doing so she learned the importance of connection through music and met her most frequent collaborator, Jahan Raymond (music composition at UCLA).

After the masterclass, they were so inspired that they wrote and produced a song called “Disposable,” combining their style with what they learned from Jacob Collier. He is such a massive inspiration for both of them and when they learned that he was coming to UCLA, they knew they had to show him their song. They COULD NOT believe they got a yes from his team. Performing for him was a magical experience, something they had been working towards separately and together for so long.

Katie and Jahan would like to extend their thanks to the UCLA team, for deeply caring about the students, and to Jacob Collier and his team for having the energy and patience to make this experience happen.

Meet Richard Bussey: Vice President, Accessories, Lifestyle, and Licensing at Fender

After unsuccessfully leading an early-2000’s punk band, Richard turned his knack for self-promotion into a business career. Beginning as an assistant buyer in the travel industry, he quickly found a passion for taste making and decisive assortment decisions. Upon moving to LA to chase a failed stand-up comedy career, he turned his focus to the music products business where he began a career at Guitar Center, where his love of business was matched with the desire to create the tools needed for musicians to craft their own sound. Joining Fender as the Director of Guitar Accessories, he launched a variety of products including Fender’s first foray into the Effects Pedal market. As Vice President, Accessories, Lifestyle, and Licensing he oversees an amazing department of product managers and a licensing department responsible for myriad partnerships and outbound collaborations, such as 2023’s
Fender x Wrangler collection.

Come meet Richard tomorrow, November 8th, at 1pm in Lani Hall for our Fender Panel. We hope to see you there:)

Meet Beth Wawerna: Director of Brand Copy at Fender

Beth is a writer, creative director and musician with over 20 years experience in media, marketing and music. She got her start in the late 90s as the Associate Editor of Spin.com, where she wrote a music news column, interviewed hundreds of artists and had the incredible privilege of getting yelled at by Papa Roach. After SPIN, Beth (somewhat inadvertently) stumbled into the world of brand marketing and a decade-long tenure as VH1’s Editorial Director – a role that sharpened her skills as a creative
leader and brand messaging strategist. But as shows like Behind the Music and Storytellers gave way to reality TV and Bret Michel’s wiglet, Beth craved a return to music. In 2018 she landed her dream job as the Director of Brand Copy at Fender, where she leads the brand voice and creative strategy for all top tier marketing campaigns across the FMIC portfolio. Beth is also a musician/songwriter and fronts the band Bird of Youth.

Come meet Beth tomorrow, November 8th, at 1pm in Lani Hall for our Fender Panel. We hope to see you there:)
