Happy 95th Birthday, Tommy Trojan! The iconic statue was unveiled on June 6, 1930, and represents the five qualities of a Trojan: faithful, scholarly, skillful, courageous and ambitious.

Known as the Trojan Shrine, USC’s Tommy Trojan statue is ageless. Happy birthday to the 90-year-old sculpture, created by Roger Noble Burnham.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing from USC Alumnus Glenn A. Sonnenberg (BA 1977, JD 1980), Co-Chair of the USC Gould School of Law Real Estate Law and Business Forum and President at Latitude Real Estate Holdings!

Q: How do you prioritize work-life balance?
A: My father always told me that one shouldn’t wait until 70 years of age to enjoy retirement; we should all take bits of retirement throughout our careers. I’ve always been mindful of this advice. Life should be a mix of work, play, family responsibilities, charitable activities, and a good dose of alone time. Sure, I have worked hard but I have always made a point of staying fit, taking trips, even if for only a weekend, not missing kids’ events, pursuing hobbies/sports, and not missing the opportunity to enjoy a night out.

Q: What do you do for self-care during stressful times?
A: When I’m stressed, I remind myself that I was stressed before but always saw a way through in the past. Things always work out. When stressed, I’ll go to the gym, or go for a walk, or just curl up in a comfortable chair to read a book and escape to another world for a while.

Q: What is your advice to new lawyers to manage their stress?
A: Life is a marathon—not a sprint. No one, even the typical “Type A” over-achieving lawyers that we are, can keep running at full speed forever. When we work too hard or find ourselves over-stressing, we are not good partners, parents, friends, or counselors. You need to take care of yourself first, so that you can be of the most use to others.

Thank you, Glenn, for these valuable reflections!

A Message from the Dean

As one of the nation's preeminent law schools, USC Gould not only provides top-notch training in the profession and all its specialties but also a culture of collegiality and tight-knit collaboration. Our small class size and low faculty-student ratio enable our students to form strong bonds with classmates and professors that continue long after graduation.

Our Vision Statement:

The University of Southern California Gould School of Law cultivates analytical ability, ethical values and a spirit of collegiality that prepare our students for meaningful careers benefiting society. We enrich human knowledge and the principles of justice through superior scholarship.

USC Gould students also benefit from becoming part of a larger university community that offers both depth and breadth. Scholars at USC can take advantage of a broad range of professional schools across the entire university — including the Marshall School of Business, the School of Cinematic Arts, the Viterbi School of Engineering, the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, the Keck School of Medicine, the Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and the Price School of Public Policy. This offers unparalleled opportunities for interprofessional collaboration and dual-degree studies.
