"When I first started college, I was set on a plan that I felt would ensure my success all while having those close to me only be proud of me. Seeing my very first Degree Progress Report, I felt I had to stick to this plan till the very end as if everything was already defined for me. But as I sat in courses that didn’t interest me the way it would others, I realized I wasn’t chasing what I actually wanted. I was chasing what I thought I was supposed to want.
Unlearning the idea that I could only have one plan and that changing direction was somehow a failure...has been both freeing and terrifying. But the truth is, we grow, we learn, and time not only heals but uncovers. Though a bit hard at first it took some self-reflection (and so many rants with friends) to learn that the idea of success I had held on to wasn’t mine anymore. And that was completely fine!! Starting over, re-editing or rewriting the plan doesn’t mean you’re lost—it means you’re listening. All to say, I’ve learned that sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is give yourself the ability to change your own plan."-Cesar Serrato, B.S. in Marketing '19
