Earlier this month, Dr. Soyoung Joo’s Sports Sponsorship class welcomed back Tom McGovern ’86, President of Optimum Sports, as a guest lecturer.
Optimum Sports is the in-house sports agency within Omnicom Media Group. Tom engaged the class in a lively discussion about the types of sponsorships he manages, which has contributed to his agency's success. It was exciting to hear about the opportunities Optimum Sports has to work with big-name companies (e.g., State Farm, AT&T) including their involvement in this year's NCAA Women’s March Madness tournament. Tom's guest lecture concluded with insightful career tips and advice that resonated with the students.

On April 3rd, Siena students had the unique opportunity to participate in Ready for the Next Step, a highly-interactive forum co-sponsored by Goldman Sachs Ayco and the YPN Campus Connect Program of the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce. Throughout this event, students were able to hear from a variety of business professionals (many of which were Siena alumni), partake in a confidence-building exercise, and network with event attendees. On behalf of Siena College, we would like to formally thank our community partners for their collaboration and commitment to creating a wonderful event. The success of this event would not have been possible without the strong ties between Siena College and the Capital Region community. We look forward to a continued partnership for many years to come!

This semester Dr. Joo welcomed two guest speakers in her Marketing 337, Sports Sponsorship course. In January, Mike McCormack ’97, Senior Vice President of Advertising Sales & Partnerships at The NBC Sports Group. In February, Jennifer Matthews, current Vice President, Brand Strategy at FanDuel and Siena Alum.

Students were able to learn more about working in the sports marketing industry, from working their way up in their careers through different companies such as the NBC Sports Group and ESPN to the marketing strategies it takes to make any campaign successful, such as the “Kick of Destiny 2” presented by FanDuel broadcasted during the 2024 Super Bowl!

Thank you to Mike and Jennifer for coming to speak to our Sports Marketing students!

Recently, Professor Kayla Waters and School of Business students Adriana Varano and Evelyn Villavicencio, Co-Vice President and Chapter Representative of Beta Alpha Psi - Nu Xi Chapter respectively, traveled to Atlanta to attend The BAP mid-year meeting. This is a chance for chapters to network and learn about the value propositions they can offer at their school through innovative events and programming.

“What I really loved about this trip was that I got to meet so many brilliant accountants from around the country and have intelligent and thought provoking conversations that made you think about new topics like AI. Another aspect of the conference that I enjoyed was listening to other BAP chapters present on what they were doing to improve certain aspects of their chapter.” - Adriana Varano

“We came back feeling refreshed and inspired to make our Chapter Nu Xi even better here at Siena!” - Professor Kayla Waters

Check out what Professor Hall’s Food Retail Marketing class did to help a local business’ social media marketing strategy!

Applied marketing at its best!

This past week in Professor Hall’s Food Retail Marketing Class students engaged and developed strategies for The Snowman to succeed in the social media space throughout the offseason.

The class focused on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok marketing strategies that will engage the demographics of those three platforms.

We thank these students for their careful and meaningful research and we look forward to implementing several of these strategies throughout our offseason!

School of Business students Emma McLaughlin and Leah Chatalian traveled to New Orleans with Dr. Cheryl Buff to present their independent research at the Academy of Business Research conference. Emma researched College Students’ Perceptions on Mental Wellbeing; Leah researched the Relationship between Social Media Influencers and the FOMO. Leah and Emma’s research, in collaboration with Dr. Buff, was self-initiated and outside the requirements of a class. After the conference they even got to explore New Orleans a bit - slide to the end to see!
