Manassas Royal Arch Chapter No. 81

Manassas Royal Arch Chapter No. 81 Manassas Royal Arch Chapter #81 was chartered October 29, 1958 and holds its stated monthly convocations on the second Thursday of each month.

Royal Arch Masonry was practiced and taught in Virginia during much of the 18th century. The first documented evidence of the conferring of the Royal Arch Degree to be found in the world is in the minutes of Fredericksburg Lodge No. 4 in Fredericksburg, Virginia and bears the date of December 22, 1753. At that time the Royal Arch was certainly attached to the work of a regular Lodge, and the work

was done under the Authority of a Master's Warrant. It became evident, however that because of the growing numbers of Chapters and the increasing membership, some specific rules and regulations were needed for the internal government of Royal Arch Chapters. As in all branches of Freemasonry, philanthropy is an important part of Royal Arch Masonry, the main charity supported by the Grand Chapter of Virginia is the Alzheimer's Association. This year's theme is: Friendship - Leadership

On this day in 1307, King Philip IV of France, who was heavily indebted to the Knights Templar, ordered some 5,000 Templars arrested and their property seized.

The grand master of the order, Jacques de Molay, and several other high-ranking members. were imprisoned. The Templars were charged with heresy, worshiping false idols, so**my, and other crimes against the church. Many were tortured until they confessed to their "crimes."

Ultimately, the king, with the cooperation of the pope, ordered de Molay and a few top Templar officers executed.

Interestingly, prior to the ex*****on, a church inquisition found the Templars innocent of the charges and lifted their excommunication, but the records of the inquisition were "misfiled." After the documents were rediscovered in the Vatican Secret Archive by a researcher in 2001, the Roman church made public the information clearing the name and reputation of the Knights Templar.

Our Potomac Commandery No. 3, K.T., joins today in remembering the order which is the inspiration for the modern-day Masonic Knights Templar.
