We spent this past Monday and Tuesday at the Tellus Science Museum's Spring Break Full STEAM Ahead event celebrating all things mathematics! Guests of the event participated in MΓΆbius strip and fold-and-cut activities, coin-flipping experiments, mathematical puzzles and games on Monday, and polygon tic-tac-toe, graph coloring, and a fun with numbers theory activity on Tuesday! We also gave away posters of famous mathematicians, math coloring books, and other goodies to everyone who visited.

A special thanks to interim chair Dr. Erik Westlund, Dr. Tad Watanabe, Dr. Tsz Chan, Irina Pashchenko, Feray Aktas, and KSU student volunteers for taking time out of their week to hopefully inspire the next generation of mathematicians!

The College of Science and Mathematics is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Erik Westlund as the next Chair of the Department of Mathematics. Dr. Westlund has spent the last year as interim chair of Mathematics and will join the CSM leadership team permanently starting July 1, 2025. He brings the right balance of innovation and continuity needed for the department to thrive.

β€œI am deeply honored and excited by the opportunity to continue to collaboratively lead and serve a truly incredible department that showcases excellence and growth in teaching, research, and service,” said Dr. Westlund. β€œWe have so much to look forward to as our institution matures and elevates in prominence; I am delighted to be part of it.”

Dr. Westlund received his B.S. in Mathematics from Northland College and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences from Michigan Technological University. His research area is algebraic and extremal graph theory and best practices in undergraduate mathematics education. Dr. Westlund came to KSU in 2011 as an assistant professor and was promoted with tenure to Associate and then full Professor.

The college would also like to thank the search committee for their hard work and dedication over the past several months in selecting the new chair.
