The Office of Student Veteran Affairs at South Texas College took part in this morning’s Whole Health and Caregiver Summit—hosted by Tropical Texas Behavioral Health and organized by the VA’s Whole Health Program team. Staff were invited to share information on veteran education benefits, drawing from both institutional knowledge and lived experience.

In addition to the event itself, attendees were given a look at Tropical’s on-site Veteran Center—a space equipped with a kitchenette, laundry room, and showers. Resources like these can offer a much-needed reset for veterans navigating temporary setbacks, and our office is glad to be able to connect students with them when needed.

This month’s RGV Veterans Coalition meeting took place in the Starr County Veterans Service Office, hosted by Mr. Rosbell (Ross) Barrera—Executive Director of the Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation, retired U.S. Army colonel, and Starr County Veterans Service Officer.

Mr. Barrera welcomed coalition members into one of the most unique office spaces the group has had the opportunity to visit. The meeting began with a quiet moment of reflection to honor Rogelio Alemán II—a U.S. Army veteran, STC student, and coalition member—who passed away earlier this week at the age of 48.

Mr. Barrera also shared a brief history of Rio Grande City and its residents’ long-standing tradition of military service, including local participation in conflicts dating back to the Civil War. He highlighted the Old Rio Grande City Cemetery, a historic site along the main road that dates back to the Civil War era and is the final resting place of multiple veterans from that period, along with other notable figures from Rio Grande City’s early history.

The South Texas College Office of Student Veteran Affairs was invited to provide updates on current outreach initiatives and to highlight efforts to expand support in the Starr County region through the Veterans Office established at the STC campus in 2022.

We are saddened to share news of the passing of former STC student and U.S. Army veteran, Rogelio Aleman. He remained active in the community throughout his life, serving as a board member with Keep McAllen Beautiful and recently running for a seat on the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees.

In recent months, Mr. Aleman would stop by our office to share flyers for the community initiatives he was involved in and often spoke about his hope to return to school when the time was right.

Our office extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow veterans.

If you got this text earlier—yes, it’s real!

South Texas College is hosting a Veterans Resource Expo on Monday, April 14th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Pecan Campus, in the Student Union Ballroom (Building U, 2nd floor).

This event is open to all veterans, not just current students. We’ll have 25+ veteran-serving organizations offering support with education, housing, employment, VA benefits, healthcare, and more. Whether you’re currently in school, considering a return, or just looking for resources—this is for you!

Parking enforcement will be suspended during the event on the south side of campus, so veterans from the community can attend without worrying about a permit. (Regular rules resume after the event.)

Spread the word, bring a friend, and we’ll see you there!

To better serve our veterans, the South Texas College Office of Student Veteran Affairs and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities participated in Military Cultural Competency training today. We sought out this training to strengthen our ability to support those who have served our great nation. 🇺🇸

While we regularly undergo training on policies and procedures, this session provided a deeper understanding of the unique experiences and challenges veterans face.

Led by Army veteran and TVC-certified Veteran Peer Service Coordinator Anthony Beltran, this training enhanced our ability to connect with and advocate for those who have served. This is one of many steps toward improving veteran services at STC, with continued initiatives aimed at better serving our veteran community.
