Meet Ariana McGee, a Springboard Enterprises 2024 Women’s Health Accelerator alumna tackling one of the most pressing challenges in maternal healthcare.

🚨 The U.S. is facing a maternal health crisis, with many communities designated as “maternal care deserts” due to a lack of OB-GYNs and midwives. Black women are disproportionately affected, experiencing higher maternal mortality rates.

McGee’s personal experience with maternal health disparities fueled her passion to create a solution. After nearly losing her life due to medical negligence during her fourth pregnancy, she recognized the urgent need for accessible, proactive care. Navigate Maternity offers a 360° remote monitoring system, empowering patients with real-time health tracking, particularly for conditions like postpartum preeclampsia. Despite facing funding challenges as a Black female founder in a male-dominated venture capital landscape, McGee persisted, securing strategic investments and partnerships. Her journey highlights the power of resilience, innovation, and community-driven solutions in transforming maternal healthcare.

For decades, women’s health has been underfunded, under-researched, and misunderstood. Most research and development is gender-neutral or focused on men. Women are often left out of clinical research, despite making up nearly half the population and the prevalence of conditions that differently, disproportionately, or distinctly impact women. Gender bias leads to delays in diagnosis and worse health outcomes for women. Clinical trials must accurately reflect the population’s health burdens.

➡️In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women. Yet, women make up only approximately one-third of clinical trial subjects.

➡️Despite women being 49.7% of the population and having higher prevalence in certain diseases, research is rarely s*x disaggregated.

➡️Only 43% of clinical trials reported s*x and ethnicity data during a 20-year period.

Have you met Dr. Lyndsey Harper, founder of Rosy Wellness? Dr. Harper was part of our 2021 Digital Health Innovation Program cohort and it has been a pleasure to watch her growth and expansion over the last few years. Rosy, in collaboration with a team of doctors and psychologists, was born out of a genuine need. While practicing as an Ob/Gyn, Dr. Harper's patients expressed a growing and urgent need for answers for their sexual health concerns that had often gone unaddressed for many years. As part of her ISSWSH fellowship in women's sexual health, Dr. Harper discovered real evidence-based solutions for women who face sexual challenges – however, they're often ignored due to embarrassment and lack of proper physician time and training. Rosy was created to be a safe place for women to find connections and interventions for sexual health needs on their own terms, all within one trusted, research-backed platform.
