76 years ago… Bob Hope performed at SMC!🎤✨

On March 9, 1948, Saint Mary’s hosted one of the biggest events in campus history—a live, nationally-broadcast radio show right from Madigan Gym! The headliner? Comedy legend Bob Hope.

The gym was packed the rafters, with a line stretching far on the campus!

At the time, SMC was still transitioning from its role as a Naval Pre-Flight School during WWII, making this event even more special. And while Bob Hope was famous for entertaining troops overseas, that night, he brought the laughs to Moraga, benefitting the Library Fund!

10 years ago today, the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center opened its doors! Since then, it's become a favorite campus spot, whether alumni visiting on tours or students making the most of the courts, weights, fitness spaces, and, of course, the pool! Neil Sweeney '50, the second-oldest living Gael at 98, has maintained a connection to Saint Mary's for more than 80 years. More than a dozen of his kids and grandkids have followed in his footsteps and attended Saint Mary's.

Neil received the Golden Gael Award, recognizing a lifetime commitment to the College.
