Historic greenspace next to Finch Fieldhouse has been named the Otteman Memorial Greenspace, after CMU Department of Recreation, Parks & Leisure Services Administration Chair, Tim Otteman. This greenspace honors the Mt. Pleasant native's lifetime giving to CMU, including a legacy gift pledge, showcasing his commitment to investing in CMU and the success of students. 💛

Tim Otteman, chair of CMU Department of Recreation, Parks & Leisure Services Administration, remembers cheering at football games in Alumni Field as a child and watching baseball between college classes at the old Theunissen Stadium, both of which once occupied the field just east of Finch Fieldhouse. This space has been named the Otteman Memorial Greenspace, honoring the Mount Pleasant native’s lifetime giving to CMU, including a pledged legacy gift. Read the story: https://bit.ly/4enpZfG

Join us in celebrating Juneteenth - a day of freedom and reflection, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. ❤️💛

Today, we honor freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This day, now recognized as Juneteenth, powerfully reminds us of the delayed but enduring promise of freedom in America.

As we reflect on the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us, we recommit to building a more just and equitable future for all. ❤️💛

About the College

In the College of Education and Human Services, we prepare students to improve the lives of children and their families in fields such as teaching, special education, family studies, child development, nutrition and dietetics, interior design and fashion merchandising and design, counseling, recreation studies, educational leadership and administration. The college is home to multiple centers that allow students to work alongside faculty to provide services to community members. CEHS has three doctoral programs — two in educational leadership and one fully online in educational technology.

A few points of pride from the college:

Our teacher education programs last year received continuing accreditation for seven years from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. It has been accredited since 1954. CMU has one of the largest teacher education programs in Michigan, graduating between 300 and 350 teacher candidates each year.

Working with community partners, we’re graduating the qualified early childhood educators needed to meet the growing demand of preschools, daycare centers and HeadStart programs. Our Child Development Learning Lab is a national model for both our design and our Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum. STEM Makerspace
