Founded in 1979, the University of Delaware ELI offers high-quality intensive ESL courses for students, professionals, & general language learners. The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and agrees to uphold the CEA standards for English Language Programs. In addition, the ELI is a member of the C

onsortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and English USA, the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), organizations that promote professional standards of quality in English programs. The ELI also follows the Core Standards of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

We were profoundly lucky to have welcomed 14 passionate, dedicated teachers through The Fulbright Program's Fulbright Korea this past January for one month of professional development and cultural immersion. Not only did the experience change their lives, but they made a lasting impact on local students, The College School at the University of Delaware, and our own faculty and staff.

The ELI's CAP Cohort students participated in an afternoon of service through the Center for Intercultural Engagement.

They learned about food insecurity on campus and packed food and hygiene supplies for 30 UD students. After, they interacted with coffee hour for the QTPOC student group! A wonderful day of community, service, and connection!

Our staff, faculty, and tutors are the heart of the ELI. We pride ourselves on our interest in cross-cultural communication and linguistics, but did you know:

1️⃣Everyone on our team has either traveled extensively or lived abroad, and therefore appreciates the challenges that international students face.
2️⃣All of our instructors are multilingual, so they understand the complexities of learning a new language.
3️⃣All of our faculty have a master's degree or higher.

This past fall, we welcomed 20 Colombian students through the Friends of Fulbright Colombia program for the first time.

Their presence on campus brought wonderful opportunities for cultural and language exchange to UD students, and will lead to more upward career mobility for the Colombian students back home. They will be surely missed! 🇨🇴

We were delighted to welcome the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman to campus last week. They met with the ELI, the Center for Global Programs & Services at University of Delaware, and other strategic partners. They also spent time with our current cohort of Omani scholars! 🇴🇲

We are grateful for a wonderful partnership with the University of Delaware College of Education & Human Development.

Our Fulbright Korea teachers, who have been participating in intensive teacher training at the ELI this month, were welcomed by The College School at the University of Delaware as guest instructors. They shared vibrant lessons on Korean culture with the students and also spent time engaging in professional development with school's educators.

What a wonderful turnout for the Session 3 2025 Meet and Greet! Students made trail mix and did some crafts - backpack decorations, headbands, bracelets, tassels, etc. A lot of the students tried out crocheting for the first time!

As we move into the summer, let's reflect on one special evening from the beginning of spring semester: Dr. Stevens' retirement celebration. Thanks to our wonderful Social Media Ambassador students for putting this together.

In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, we want to show some gratitude to a very influential woman at the ELI: Ruwida Alkrekshi. She founded the ELI Women's Group after recognizing the need for a safe space for women of varying cultural backgrounds to share and express themselves. The full documentary, by UD student Nadya Ellerhorst, is currently making the film festival rounds. We're so proud of her efforts to showcase this important feature of the ELI!

Our Story

Celebrating 40 years of excellence in English teaching!

Founded in 1979, the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) offers the highest-quality intensive English programs for degree-seeking students, business and legal professionals, English language teachers and general English language learners.

In the past 40 years, over 18,000 students and professionals have graduated from the ELI. Many of these graduates have pursued their higher education at the University of Delaware or at other U.S. universities. Some have returned to their home countries, where they have built careers in service to others. Our graduates include a university president, government officials, scientists/academics, community leaders, motivational speakers, actors, entrepreneurs, and even a former vice-presidential candidate of Colombia!

Our mission is to meet or exceed the expectations of our students, meeting their ordinary (or extraordinary!) needs so that their experience is productive and fulfilling.
