William Elmer Gries Obituary – The Washington Post
William Elmer Gries, affectionately known as Bill to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, in Rockville, MD, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on July 16, 1945, in Cleveland, WI, Bill was the beloved son of Raymond and Agnes (Schwinn) Gries and a cherished brother to Ruth (LaCroix), Richard, Harold, and Betty (Rieth).
Bill's early life in Wisconsin set the stage for a lifelong love of the outdoors. He pursued his passion at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse (Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation), The Pennsylvania State University (Master of Education in Parks and Recreation), and the University of Northern Colorado (Master of Arts).
For 44 years, Bill dedicated himself to enhancing public spaces as a land acquisition specialist for the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. His work ensured that generations to come will enjoy the beauty and serenity of over 19,500 acres of park land, recreational areas and well-preserved natural environments in Montgomery County.
The family was the cornerstone of Bill's life. For over fifty-eight years, he was an adoring and devoted husband to his wife, Jean Ellen (Scharenbroch). He was a loving father to sons Patrick William Gries and Alan Richard Gries (Jennifer Prevost). Bill spent much of the last thirty years doting on his eight grandchildren: Rachel (Adam Goldsher), Lauren (Jarret DiGasso), Benjamin, Ryan (Jane Reminger), Sarah, Anna, Jessica and Aidan, as well as his great-grandson August. His love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life, from cheering on his sons and grandchildren at sporting events, to countless hiking, camping and fishing trips, to enjoying the true beauty of nature at a family property in the Piedmont of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Bill's enthusiasm for sports was infectious. He was a familiar face at Penn State and Virginia Tech football games, where he relished tailgating with family and friends. His commitment to fitness and running was inspiring — he completed 61 marathons, including the New York and Boston Marathons, as well as countless half-marathons and other races around the world. Running was more than a hobby for Bill. It was a passion that was fueled by his endless optimism, determination and zeal for new challenges.
Those who knew Bill will remember him as a man of great thoughtfulness. His ability to see the good in any situation and his unwavering support of his loved ones defined his character. Bill's generous spirit, optimistic outlook, and thoughtful nature left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Bill's legacy will live on through the beautiful parks he helped create, the family he adored, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness. He ran life's marathon with grace, strength, and an ever-present smile, leaving behind memories that will be cherished forever.
As we bid farewell to William Elmer Gries, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and the pursuit of happiness. Bill's journey on this earth may have concluded, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. We take solace in knowing that his was a life of purpose, passion, and profound impact. Rest in peace, dear Bill. Your memory will always be a beacon of light for your family, friends, and community.
