Master of Arts in Transformational Urban Leadership www.matul.org Earn your MA in Transformational Urban Leadership while living, serving and learning within slum communities globally and marginalized communities in the US.

The MATUL program is a field-based program that prepares students to implement spiritual, socio-economic, political, and environmental change throughout the world. Residence in or near actual slum communities enables students to combine living and learning in an integrated approach to leadership development, with a primary focus on improving opportunities for the urban poor.

We're gathering leaders from 10 African cities this week to discuss setting up urban mission centers. Our meeting in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa, reflects our calling. We need your prayers as organizational stress can overshadow our true purpose, but this is a crucial step in God's plan to spread urban mission training across Africa.

"Go to the people.
Live with them.
Learn from them.
Love them.
Start with what they know.
Build with what they have.

But with the best leaders,
when the work is done,
the task accomplished,
the people will say,
'We have done this ourselves.'"

What do you think of when you hear "Social Entrepreneurship"? Is it a business catchphrase or could it be more? In the MATUL degree, students learn to develop and multiply entrepreneurial leaders in urban poor communities. Social entrepreneurship can mean empowerment, freedom, financial provision, and community flourishing.

Social Entrepreneurship is a core value in the M.A. in Transformational Urban Leadership (MATUL) at William Carey International University. Learn more or apply today at wciu.edu/matul!

Urban living environment directly impacts residents’ health and safety. Research has shown that “adequate housing has intimate links to a person’s physical and mental well-being.” Additionally, “Crowded housing or housing with a poor water supply can increase the spread of infectious diseases.” This is as true today as it was during infectious disease outbreaks throughout history.

In megacities around the world, informal and slum communities are densely populated, leaving residents vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks.

Urban planning and design directly impacts urban communities, especially vulnerable and marginalized members of the community. How does urban living environment intersect with health and well-being in COVID-era megacities? Do you see these dynamics in your community?

Urban and housing design has intimate links to health. Poor design choices can worsen health, with underlying issues of inequality a driving factor.

Solidarity with the poor is a core value of the M.A. in Transformational Urban Leadership (MATUL). Indigenous Australian activist Lilla Watson expressed the heart of solidarity when she said, "If you have come to help me, don't waste your time, but if your wellbeing and liberation are bound up with mine, let us work together."

With whom are your wellbeing and liberation bound? Is Jesus calling you to a deeper level of solidarity with society's poor and marginalized?
