This image by photographer, filmmaker + ArtCenter alum Ami Vitale been selected as both one of National Geographic’s best pictures of the year, as well as the 2024 selection for its list of most compelling images of the 21st century.

Vividly capturing a groundbreaking, yet heartbreaking moment in the mission to save the northern white rhinos from extinction, the image features of this tiny creature confirmed the creation of the world’s first successful IVF rhino pregnancy by Biorescue Project.

Tragically, the 70-day-old rhinoceros fetus’ life was cut short when his surrogate mother succumbed to a bacterial infection triggered by heavy rainfall and flooding.

The team has plans to try again in early 2025.

We are sending our deepest sympathy and support to those impacted by this week's devastating fires and windstorms, especially in our local communities surrounding Pasadena.

While our ArtCenter campuses remain safe and secure, out of an abundance of caution, both will remain closed until further notice as we prepare for our spring term.

Tragically, some of our faculty, students and staff have lost their homes; and numerous others have been evacuated to temporary shelters.

In response to this crisis, we have initiated an emergency fund to provide support to affected members of the ArtCenter community.Your contribution can make a significant difference in helping our community rebuild and recover. See the accompanying link for an opportunity to you support the fund.

The situation remains fluid, and whatever the next few days and weeks may bring, we have every confidence that this community's resilience will remain strong.
