November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR).

"Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance." (glaad.org.them.us)

This post raises awareness about the violence against the transgender community.

Join us today for an art activity and lunch for Transgender Day of Remembrance at 12:00 pm

Please join us as we welcome our New Graduate Student Mentor, Sara Vanovac🧡🤍

Sara Vanovac is a third-year PhD student in Physics working under Professor Olexei Motrunich. Her research focuses on the non-equilibrium dynamics of low-dimensional, strongly correlated systems, where, within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics, she constructs perturbations that lead to anomalous transport and thermalization.

At Caltech, she served on the PMA Advisory Board and was the co-chair of the FUTURE in Physics workshop. Currently, she is most interested in the topic of inclusion and how we can build communities that foster collaboration and growth while minimizing competition and uniformity.

As the CCID Graduate Student Mentor, Sara will mainly support students in our signature programs, Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) and First-Year Success Research Institute (FSRI).

Veterans come from all walks of life, representing the rich diversity that makes our nation strong. At the CCID, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every veteran's story is valued and respected.

On this Veterans Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to all veterans for their courage, sacrifice, and dedication. We recognize the unique challenges faced by veterans from historically excluded communities and are dedicated to supporting their journey through advocacy, education, and community engagement. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all who have served.

On Thursday, November 14th, Caltech will partner with Leadership Pasadena for an event highlighting the experience of Veterans at Chen 100 from 6pm-8pm.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. During Diwali, people decorate their homes with oil lamps and colorful lights, burst fireworks, exchange gifts, and share delicious sweets. It's a time for family gatherings, feasting, and spreading joy and positivity.

This year, the Graduate Club, OASIS (Organization of the Associated Students of the Indian Subcontinent), will host their annual Diwali Celebration.
Date: Friday, November 8th
Time: 6 PM - Midnight
Location: Chen Gardens

🌼✨ Día de los Mu***os ✨🌼

This week, we honor and remember our loved ones who have passed away. This beautiful tradition reminds us that those we cherish are never truly gone, as long as we keep their memories alive. 💀❤️

Share your ofrendas and stories with us! Let’s celebrate the lives of those who came before us and the love that connects us all. 🌟

Happy International Pronouns Day

Today, we celebrate the importance of respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns. Using the correct pronouns is a simple yet powerful way to affirm someone's identity and show respect. Let's create a world where everyone feels seen and valued for who they are.

In 1992, Berkeley, CA instituted Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a counter-celebration to the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas. Indigenous Peoples’ Day has since been recognized in different forms and under a variety of names. This day is meant to recognize the painful and resilient history Indigenous people have faced and to celebrate their communities.

After years of advocacy and activism, the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was issued in 2021. It is celebrated on the 2nd Monday of October.

Because our values are Education, Advocacy, Cultural Exchange, Leadership Development, and Coalition Building, we at the Caltech Center for Inclusion & Diversity (CCID) will highlight Women's Equality Day, honor Women's rights, commemorate women's right to vote and provide key areas systemic inequalities still exist for Black women, Indigenous women, and women of color.
