For Drexel students interested in international academic experiences, Intensive Courses Abroad (ICA) offer the opportunity to travel, learn, and grow.

During the Fall 2023 quarter, students in the "Drexel Fall Break in Tanzania” ICA traveled to northern Tanzania to partner with two on-the-ground organizations to help launch a computer lab at a local secondary school.

“We really emphasize to the students throughout the entire experience that everything that we're talking about in terms of culture and how culture informs community development and approaches can be applied right here in Philadelphia, and that’s something they can bring home with them that can inform the ways in which they interact with their communities, their projects and their aspirations,” said Senior Director of Education Abroad Ahaji Schreffler.

What do drumming and data have in common? 🎶

Priya Kuruganti, a third-year operations and supply chain management student, is uniting her passion for music and business through unique learning experiences at Drexel.

Last month, Kuruganti led her team to victory in the Measure of Music Hackathon, a competition in which student groups present a project that highlights the use of data in the music industry. Kuruganti’s team, HomeStage, pitched a platform that would help local and independent music venues book artists.

“I saw an opportunity to really get my foot in the door in the music industry,” Kuruganti says. “I didn’t enter saying ‘I want to win this.’ I just did it because I thought it would help guide me to see what I would want to do in the future."

"Growing up with immigrant parents I saw how much my parents loved helping others and not expecting anything in return. It motivated me to work in a field where I can do the same," says Anika Islam, current undergraduate student in the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health. Islam is majoring in Public Health with a minor in Health Services Administration. She plans to use her degree to advocate for policies that improve health outcomes for underrepresented communities and reduce healthcare disparities.

Islam completed her first co-op at the Center for Public Health Readiness and Response at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). "During my co-op, I gained knowledge in substance use disorder, hand hygiene, and the diverse facets of public health," Islam shares.

"One valuable lesson I gained from my Drexel co-op experience is to approach situations with the best intent. Whether in a professional or academic setting, there can be times when there is frustration present. I discovered that maintaining a positive outlook in those situations can help."

"I use my speaking platforms to break the fourth wall of business and allow my community to see the trials and tribulations it took me to develop my startup," says Paige DeAngelo, BA communications ’23.

DeAngelo is the founder of Aer Cosmetics, a sustainable cosmetics company that has developed a refillable, water-soluble, vegan, and cruelty-free mascara. While DeAngelo came to Drexel expecting to pursue a career in journalism and meteorology, her interest in developing sustainable solutions led her to Drexel's Entrepreneurship Co-op through the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship and mentor, Charles Sacco.

"I hope to inspire younger entrepreneurs that they, too, are capable of accomplishing their dreams," says DeAngelo. "Recently, I’ve begun traveling to different universities and high schools as a guest and keynote speaker to share how I went from no experience to a launched business while I was in their shoes, and how they can do it too."

Congratulations to our fourth-year students in the Drexel University College of Medicine who celebrated earlier this month! 🎉

Match Day takes place nationwide on the third Friday of March each year. Thousands of hardworking medical students gather together to open their envelopes and learn where they have matched for their medical residency. Our students were joined by family and friends who celebrated all their Dragons have achieved.

“Class of 2024, we have done our very best to mold you into outstanding clinicians, filled with compassion, a dedication to lifelong learning, and the drive to be forces for change and advocates for your patients,” said Charles B. Cairns, MD, Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Dean and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, in an address to students.

“At the same time, you have also been shaping Drexel and the surrounding Philadelphia community. Your outstanding community outreach efforts and work with Philadelphia’s underserved populations have helped to fulfill Drexel’s mission to be one of the most civically engaged universities in the U.S.”

"I am a Drexel legacy," says Zoe Ann Boynton, current student in the Drexel University School of Education. "My mom attended Drexel back in the day. I switched my major many times, but elementary education had a special place in my heart."

"I have gathered so many special experiences, from being on practicum/field placements around the Philadelphia area to now being on co-op," shares Boynton. "My field experiences at multiple West Philly schools has provided me with deep insights for when I become an educator."

In addition to preparing for her career, Boynton is a civically engaged student and member of Drexel's Latinos for a United Campus and the Drexel Black Student Union.

Boynton also received the opportunity to serve a student mentor for the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, partnering with Transitions Pathways, where she mentors students with autism who are transitioning from high school to the career force.

Over the weekend, the Drexel women's basketball team secured their victory as the 2024 CAA Champions and are now on their way to compete in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Austin, TX this Friday, March 22.

"This team, the way they played the last four games, it just shows their resilience," says Head Coach Amy Mallon in an interview with ESPN. "We talked all year long it was going to be a year of rebuilding ... and they just proved to everybody that anybody can be a Cinderella team. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Drexel University's first-of-it's-kind partnership with Apple Computer, Inc. company (today's Apple Inc.). Students, and most of the faculty, received a discounted, brand-new Apple Macintosh personal computer in early 1984 — before it was available to the general public.

The story of Drexel’s Microcomputing Program serves as an example of Drexel leaders anticipating the workplace of the future, entirely in line with Drexel’s 1891 founding mission to prepare students for a changing world.

For those looking to increase their creativity, finding a state of "flow" is essential. A new neuroimaging study from Drexel University’s Creativity Research Lab is the first to reveal how the brain gets to the creative flow state.

Led by John Kounios, PhD, professor in the College of Arts and Sciences and Creativity Research Lab director, and David Rosen, PhD, a recent graduate from the College and Johns Hopkins University postdoc – the team determined their results suggest that creative flow can be achieved by training people to release control when they have built up enough expertise in a particular domain.

Congratulations to Drexel University's LeBow College of Business Build Relationships in Diverse Group Experiences (BRIDGE) for receiving the 2024 Inspiring Programs in Business Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, which honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the field of business.

Award winners were selected based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in business through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

“Aligning with social science research on the importance of belonging in students’ success, especially in the success of students whose identities are underrepresented in a particular environment, BRIDGE enhances the student experience and fosters a sense of belonging, engagement and empowerment,” said Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Leslie Ashburn-Nardo. “Developed on four pillars (academic excellence, community activism, social engagement and financial literacy), BRIDGE not only serves as an exemplary student support model for underrepresented populations but as a template for an effective learning community in higher education.”

Ale Gonzales, a recent alumna and graduate from the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science at Drexel University, is driven to make environmental sciences accessible to all communities.

“The interdisciplinary nature of this major has been so rewarding to my experience as a student,” Gonzales says. “I love connecting dispersed knowledge and getting to see all the paths I could take my degree in through my classes and field experiences.”

Gonzales worked with the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University to create educational lesson plans for their Plastic-free Philly campaign, aimed at reducing single-use plastic water bottles in our city. Throughout this work, Gonzales explored how to incorporate environmental learning experiences into public school curricula.

“I came to Drexel because I knew I would get a lot of diverse experiences in the form of co-ops, and I made sure to work in four or five different industries with multiple internships and co-ops,” says Adit Gupta, current PhD student at Drexel University's College of Computing & Informatics (CCI).

“One of the things that Drexel does really well is it gives you a full platter of opportunities that might exist in the city [of Philadelphia].”

A tense experience during the COVID-19 pandemic forced Gupta to draw on everything he’d learned at Drexel to save his family’s business. Gupta and a friend countered a pandemic-related fall-off in foot traffic at the family’s store with their company Lula Convenience. Lula Convenience provides convenience store delivery software, and Gupta is the cofounder and CEO.

Emerging from its early days amid the global pandemic, Lula has expanded to serve more than 150,000 U.S. convenience stores and has earned multiple rounds of funding from top investors.

“Every experience, whether a good one or a bad one, is a new learning opportunity,” says Gupta.

In a recent special topics course in collaboration with Drexel's Innovation Engine and Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, the research and development arm of Fidelity Investments, Drexel students are creating new opportunities for Millennials and Gen Z investors to engage with their financial data.

“I learn best by having an actual experience,” says Caleb Kim, a fourth-year student majoring in entrepreneurship and innovation. “I can learn in a lecture and learn concepts, but I’m not retaining that information unless I’m putting it into application,”

“Teamwork was one of the biggest things I took away from this class," Kim continues. "We had to learn everyone’s strengths, set timelines, communicate with each other. It was also great to learn about the Agile development process and use it.”
