Tomorrow we welcome back Dr. Laliv Melamed, speaking as part of our AIR Speaker Series. Speaking with Temple FMA MFA alum Ra'anan Alexandrowicz (Director, The Viewing Booth, The Law in These Parts) and moderated by Dr. Nora Alter, Dr. Melamed will present "Homecoming," a lecture on her work from her book SOVEREIGN INTIMACY.

Facilitated by the affordances of DV technologies in the 1990s’ private market, families of fallen Israeli soldiers started to create their own commemorations of their private kin – no longer a national hero, but an intimate loved one. In this talk I will define what I term sovereign intimacy, a media complex that displaces state violence into the home, where it is domesticated and disavowed. The talk will explore the relations between the private media form, the production of subjectivity and the intricated, public-private sites of memory and statecraft in the context of the ongoing settler colonial violence in Israel-Palestine.

Laliv Melamed is an assistant professor of film and media studies at the University of Groningen. She writes on governance, sentimental politics and the public sphere in nonfiction media and documentary. Melamed is the author of Sovereign Intimacy: Private Media and the Traces of Colonial Violence (University of California Press, 2023).

This event is free and open to the public! We hope to see you there! 📚

If we’re going to talk about the Trojan War, we need a drink. So starts PENELOPE, a new musical with music and lyrics by Alex Bechtel, book by Alex Bechtel, Grace McLean, and Temple Owl Eva Steinmetz ('24)!

Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, is fed up and has some things she wants to say. With glass of bourbon in hand, she takes the microphone to chronicle those twenty years waiting on the small island kingdom of Ithaca. With soulful music, this witty and thoughtful musical flips the script on the dutiful wife, as Penelope steps out of the background to claim her time in the spotlight.

Congratulations, Eva! PENELOPE runs for one more week through April 24th - if you're in DC, be sure to check it out!

Today at 5:30: Join us for a free screening of the 1964 documentary CULLODEN! ⛑

What if we could capture history from 300 years ago? This groundbreaking docudrama is seen as a breakthrough in the use of documentary to frame historical narrative. An anti-war film, documentarians capture a bloody 1745 Scottish battle from a series of prospectives including the voices of officers, soldiers, and locals caught in the crossfire.

Join Sèamus Wilson, Temple Student and Film Scholar for a screening of this remarkable film, and join in a chat afterwards about the significance of the work in today’s embattled climate.
