The Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages' Korean language program recently hosted a Korean cultural festival where more than 170 students played traditional Korean games such as yut-nori, top-spinning, jegichagi, Ttakgi and tuho throwing, and participated in cultural experiences like drawing folk paintings, making Taegeukgi bracelets and keychains with traditional Korean designs. Students sampled traditional Korean delicacies including gimbap, tteokbokki, dumplings and japchae.

CoAS Research Day is underway in PISB. Faculty and students from all CoAS departments display the results of their investigations. Research awards will be given at the conclusion of today's event.
"Diverse scientists with different perspectives and experiences regardless of gender, race and age can bring unique approaches to analyze problems in various ways, leading to new discoveries," says Assistant Professor of Chemistry Myungwoon Lee, PhD. "Also, female scientists can inspire a new generation of women to pursue their careers and help them to break down gender stereotypes in the field of science." This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor the #WomenInSTEM in the College of Arts and Sciences who are advancing their fields despite barriers.
Happy New Year! Wishing everyone a happy and successful 2023. 🎉
As 2022 draws to a close, the College of Arts and Sciences thanks our community for a fantastic year. We can't wait to see what 2023 has in store!

Characterizing Ventilation in Indoor Spaces
Associate Professor of Chemistry Ezra Wood, PhD, and chemistry major and Maryanoff Scholar Asad Baig recently tested the ventilation in the conference room in the Provost’s Office.
Dr. Wood and students have been measuring air exchange rates in Drexel buildings since last Spring, mostly focusing on large lecture halls and classrooms.
Here Dr. Wood answers a few questions about the process.
Why is it important to characterize ventilation in indoor spaces?
Transmission of respiratory diseases like COVID, the common cold, and influenza occurs predominantly via respiratory aerosols - small particles that effectively go where the air goes, just like cigarette smoke. Earlier in the pandemic transmission was erroneously thought to be dominated by respiratory "droplets" which could only travel short distances, but this is now known to be of secondary importance compared to aerosols. So in addition to vaccination and masking, good ventilation is very important for ensuring a safe indoor environment. Filtration using air purifiers is effective too!
What is the process for testing the air flow?
We increase the CO2 concentration in the room using dry ice and then monitor the decay of the CO2 concentration over time using a couple of hand-held CO2 monitors.
What did you discover about the conference room's air flow?
The conference room had adequate ventilation for a room that at times will hold up to 20 people.
