After two centuries as a prestigious organization and museum, The Academy of Natural Sciences — the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere — entered an affiliation with Drexel, a longstanding partner, that changed both institutions.

As a result, the College of Arts and Sciences created the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science (BEES) that incorporates the Academy and its collections into co-op, research, courses, teaching, outreach and field site projects.

The University wasn’t founded with degree programs or the Drexel Co-op. In fact, it wasn’t even founded as “Drexel University.”

To this day, these skills help him better understand people's behaviors and give him vital insight into the global market in his job as the Product Owner of Visual Community Generated Content at IKEA. In this role, Langel, who earned his MBA from LeBow College of Business - Drexel University, develops digital strategies and video technology to promote IKEA's product line across more than 25 different countries.

Social Networks and Health, a new course in the Department of Sociology, explores how social networks influence health through creative assignments including photo scrapbooks and fiction writing.

Drexel University was awarded a Colonial Academic Alliance IN/CO Award to develop the course, in which multidisciplinary teams of visual artists learned how to visually investigate and represent mental health and wellbeing while drawing on social scientific knowledge of illness and health disparities.

In the blog post below, Philosophy, Politics and Economics major Anthony Martin discusses his experience as a student in this course. https://drexel.edu/coas/news-events/news/2025/July/sociology-class-new-lens-on-health/

Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences John Kounios, PhD, joined The Connection on WHYY to discuss how he uses neuroimaging technology to understand creativity.

Kounios has spent years cracking the code of creativity by using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to see what’s going on inside our heads while we problem solve. Learn more at the link below.

Summer has arrived in Philadelphia — and so has Volume 9 of Paper Dragon, the literary journal of Drexel University's MFA in Creative Writing program.

"As humans, we make art for many reasons: to process, to release, to heal, to connect, to inform, to protest, and because we cannot stop," shared co-editors Krista Beucler and Reagan Prior. "Even when the world is full of noise, we make art. Perhaps, especially then. And when the world is full of noise, we turn to art as a way of making sense of the world. We want to celebrate all of the artists whose work features in Volume 9, who bring us a reprieve."

Paper Dragon is managed and edited by Drexel MFA students and published with generous help from the Drexel Publishing Group. Through civic engagement, its mission is to provide a platform for the amplification of communities that have historically been underrepresented in literature.

Speakers at Drexel's University-wide commencement ceremony shared advice, reflections and life lessons to prepare the Class of 2025 for the next chapter of their lives.

“To Drexel's Class of ’25, I struggled with writing this speech because as much as I want to say 'before we embark on this journey into the workforce, blah blah blah' — we’ve already had real work experience," said Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government Association Katie Moorcones, political science and sociology ’25.

"So instead, good luck on picking what’s for dinner every night, paying your bills, trying to go to the gym regularly, having a bedtime and many of the other nuances of being a real adult.”

Allison Choong recently had the opportunity to showcase her work on a global stage.

The sociology and criminology and justice studies double major was among 15 finalists selected out of over 700 applicants for the Young Global Changers Recoupling Awards. This accomplishment awarded her a fully funded trip to pitch her project, 'Safiya Speaks Up,' at the 2025 Global Solutions Summit in Berlin, Germany this May, where she represented Drexel University and her home country of Malaysia.

'Safiya Speaks Up' is a multilingual children's book, mentor’s guide and educational initiative aimed at teaching young girls about sexual violence. Choong received positive reactions during the pitch competition and attendees agreed that 'Safiya Speaks Up' is a resource that belongs in schools worldwide.

"Unfortunately, sexual violence is something that's present in every country,” Choong explained. “People from many different countries told me that this is something relevant in their country and that they knew someone who could have benefited from this book. It was amazing to have so many leaders come up to me to give me their contact information. Hopefully we will have more conversations about funding the project or helping with distribution in countries we haven't reached yet.”

Our Story

Drexel University’s College of Arts and Sciences stands unafraid in the face of change. We are committed to implementing in-the-moment change, not for personal glory, but because it’s what the world needs. We recognize that our ever-evolving, fast-paced culture requires a new approach to education — one that embraces both the breadth of knowledge acquired through the liberal arts and the depth of knowledge made possible through experiential learning.

Innovation requires more than an ambitious personality. It requires versatility — we must not only be experts in our fields, but also agile enough to engage in the cross-disciplinary work needed to address modern problems resourcefully. That’s why our co-op program inserts students within a professional culture, introducing them to the expectations of the job while offering hands-on, practical application of coursework. It’s why students in Drexel’s community-based learning courses don’t just read about complex, global issues; they study alongside the people affected by them — in prisons, hospitals, hospice centers and more. And it’s why, starting as early as freshmen year, students team with faculty members as peers, conducting research that affects the world now.
