Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an annual U.S. Federal holiday celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued on January 1, 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. On that historic day, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom for approximately 250,000 African Americans who were previously enslaved in the state.

The celebration of Juneteenth has deep roots in African American history, including the tradition of First Watch Night Services. Originating on December 31, 1862, these services were held by enslaved and freed African Americans awaiting news of their freedom as mandated by the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth's journey to becoming a federal holiday spanned decades of advocacy and legislative efforts. The earliest bills seeking federal recognition of Juneteenth were introduced in the U.S. Congress as early as 1996. However, it wasn't until June 17, 2021, when Congress passed legislation and President Joe Biden signed it into law, officially establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. This milestone marked a significant step in acknowledging and honoring the historical and cultural significance of Juneteenth nationwide.

Today, Juneteenth serves as a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in their quest for equality and justice. It is a day of celebration of freedom, heritage, and cultural resilience, reminding us of the ongoing journey toward racial equity.

The UWest Psychology Department successfully held its inaugural Meet and Greet event last month on April 24, coinciding with Denim Day, a significant day dedicated to Sexual Assault Awareness. This gathering provided a platform for students, community mental health professionals, and holistic practice partners to connect and engage. Esteemed organizations including Counseling Partners of Los Angeles , YWCA San Gabriel Valley , GoArmy US Army Chaplaincy, AADAP, , API RISE , and Pranic Healing collaborated with us to enhance mental health awareness and promote holistic healing practices.

The event also served as an opportunity to recognize and honor students from our psychology programs, past, present, and future, celebrating their academic and professional journeys. Looking ahead, the department is committed to making this an annual event, aiming to strengthen ties with our community partners, further develop our programs, and support our students' ongoing growth.
