Clint Scholarship Recipient - Jessica
“I am 26 years old and the oldest daughter of immigrant parents, as well as the first generation to attend college. My dad went to school until 3rd grade and my mom finished 8th grade. Education was not a priority in my family for generations, until I made the decision to change that for myself. I began working at the age of 16 to help my family, which completely derailed any college plans. Once I graduated High School, I moved to the states and began working full-time. . . I know I started school late, but am still proud of pushing through despite challenges. I will be using this opportunity [of receiving the Clint Scholarship] to complete my prerequisites with exceptional grades and then apply to the nursing program.”

Clint Scholarship Recipient - Adrianna
"This scholarship means more to me than just an award for my achievements. Instead, it means that I can provide for my family, reach my goals, support my loved ones, and overcome the cycle of poverty! In addition to these challenges, I am also a burn survivor. Luckily, I made a full recovery. This experience led me to my career path. The physical therapists in the ICU and the burn hospital were wonderful. They were a huge help in my recovery. In fact, with the physical therapist’s help I was able to return to competitive soccer a month after I was released from the hospital! Therefore, my goals for attending Chemeketa are getting plenty of useful life skills and credits that will benefit me when I’m going to school to get my doctorate in physical therapy. Once I get licensed as a certified physical therapist I intend on giving back to the community by primarily offering my expertise to the elderly. . . I will focus my studies on how I can improve their quality of life through physical therapy.

Clint Scholarship Recipient: Dale
"“I will use this [Clint] scholarship to fulfill a lifelong unfulfilled promise to my mother who passed away when I was 24 years old. I promised her I would obtain my bachelor’s degree and finish college but never had the resources or opportunity to do so until now. . . Graduating with a bachelors in Leadership and Business Management will provide the credentials for the experience I already have and provide me with better career opportunities as well. This scholastic journey has taught me that I can be a leader no matter where I am in my professional life. I’ve built relationships and camaraderie with my fellow students and faculty that will last a lifetime. The knowledge I have and will continue to gain through these classes has prepared me to sit at the proverbial business table with anyone and feel confident that I belong.”

Clint Scholarship Recipient, Mariana - "One of the things that stood out about this scholarship and inspired me is that it was created to empower hard-working students who want to help in their communities. Helping in my community is something I love to do. When I was little I was not sure what I wanted to do. I just knew I had a dream to one day help others and give back to my community. That same dream has led me to pursue an interest in Immigration law. I am planning to transfer to Willamette University after my time here at Chemeketa to do just that.”

Clint Scholarship Recipient, Allison
“I currently work two part time jobs while attending Chemeketa. I work early hours before attending class at my retail job and go straight to my Teen Coordinator position at the Salem Boys and Girls Club. I enjoy mentoring youth and teens of Salem and encouraging them to pursue their own dreams, goals, and passions. Through my jobs, soccer, and running community, I always want to be a role model that I wish I had growing up. In a world that is so easily negative and harsh, I think it is important to give guidance, challenge others to grow, and encourage those around you to be everything they can be. With this scholarship I feel like this is helping me become everything I can be at my time at Chemeketa.”

In honor of Dr. Burtis, we wish him the best in his retirement.

Honoring Dr. Kerry Burtis at his final choir performance. In his many years at Chemeketa, Dr. Kerry Burtis has been an incredible advocate for the arts and has bolstered the music program and garnered thousands of dollars in program and student assistance fund support. Burtis led several initiatives during his time at the college, including an intimate Music in the Vineyard fundraiser at Willamette Valley Vineyards, the renowned Acclaimed Artist Series which ran (and continues to run) for the past several years and brought world-famous performers to Salem to share their music with our students and with the greater community, hosted several innovative "Car Choir" performances during the Covid-19 pandemic allowing students an opportunity to gather and perform safely, and helped establish scholarship opportunities and emergency support funds for students in the music program at Chemeketa. We hope you will celebrate the accomplishments of our talented choir students and honor Burtis' legacy here at Chemeketa.

Congratulations to scholarship recipient Christina, and to all of our 2024 Chemeketa Graduates!

An amazing success story:

Hello everyone. I wanted to share a brief part of my story with you today. I am a nontraditional student. I started my journey at Chemeketa in the fall of 2021. It took a long time for me to come back to school. I graduated high school at seventeen years old and began experimenting with drugs the same year. By nineteen years old I was fully in my addiction and using he**in. I lived that way until the age of twenty nine. I lost so much during my addiction including a marriage, two of my children, and my home. It wasn’t until I started losing my mind that I finally decided to enter treatment on my own accord. You see, in that last year of using I had a drug induced psychosis. I would hear multiple voices over a 10 month period. It was the most terrifying experience of my lifetime. I showed up to treatment determined to change my life on October 4, 2017. AND CHANGE IT DID!

I have been sober ever since. At treatment I worked closely with a counselor who helped me forever change my life. I knew I could and would be able to do that work one day. This led me to Chemeketa. I heard they had an addiction studies program. I painfully held onto the stigma that addicts don't amount to anything. I purposely started slow. I truly thought I was stupid,
perma-fried. I thought my mind was so damaged from my drug use that I could not succeed.

It was during fall term I heard about the TRIO program. I signed up and I credit this program to much of my success. My three years at Chemeketa have not been easy. I have had to balance motherhood, work, classwork/class time and an internship. There was a tragic death in my family the day before Fall term last year. This activated my PTSD from a similar death. My success coach and counseling services at Chemeketa were there for me when I was in crisis. They helped me navigate the term and make it through this difficult time.

I made it through and can only look to the future. I am now 300 hours away from my official licensure as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I have been hired as a counselor. I have been accepted into Portland State University. I will be continuing in the social work program. I will eventually join a masters program to become an LCSW and be able to work with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

I never understood what the community in community college meant until I joined the TRIO program. I remember the first time Lupe, the front desk assistant, called me by my name.
That made me feel so seen, and solidified that I belong here. To all the advisors and staff, thank you for showing me I belong on campus. Thank you for your reminders about all the deadlines. To Hayley thank you for believing in me when I did not believe in myself. Thank you for pushing me to get outside my comfort zone. Your belief in me has pushed me to achieve things I never thought were possible. Thank you to past and current TRIO tutors. You have
polished my work and have freely entertained my child so I can finish homework. I will never forget that kindness. I would also like to thank my family's support. You guys sacrifice time with
me in order to support my goals.

Lastly, if you are struggling with your mental health I want to normalize that. Your struggles, your challenges, and your story is just as valid and impactful as mine. I urge you to talk to someone. It wasn’t until I connected with someone that I could heal. Recovery is
possible.
