“You will now come to understand why the cup of our endurance runneth over.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as told by Dr. Clarence B. Jones (co-founder of USF's Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice (INSJ), who smuggled Dr. King’s letter from Birmingham Jail

USF’s INSJ will commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with “The Meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Today” on Monday, Jan. 27.

“Please join us for a special community event at which we will rededicate ourselves to Dr. King’s vision of a just nation and world, an end to racism, poverty, and war, and his call to nonviolent action to build the Beloved Community together. Members of the extended USF family will briefly share their thoughts and feelings about Dr. King’s message and its relevance today. Each panelist will briefly share thoughts and feelings for the occasion, and then we will open up the conversation to everyone who joins us.” - INSJ Co-founder Jonathan Greenberg

“The reason I am in this office is because of Clarence Jones, John Lewis, and Martin Luther King.” - President Barack Obama

Salvador Chavez ’93 is the co-founder and COO of Prósperos a modern financial platform that provides a simple and convenient mobile banking experience for Spanish speakers across the Western hemisphere.

Salvador Chavez also known as “Chava” is a first-generation Latino who witnessed the financial challenges faced by underserved communities.

"We grew up poor and when my father needed money, he had to go to a loan shark which was 10% interest a week. Today, the rate for a personal loan in Salinas, CA is 7.5% interest per week,” said Chava. “This is why I’m trying to make a difference.”

"Breaking cycles of poverty starts with providing people the knowledge and the tools they need in the financial system. These historical challenges have created cycles of financial security that were difficult to break. When you provide access to free banking and free accounts, the rest of the community will follow, and when people budget, save and use tools like Prósperos effectively—they can create wealth and economic mobility.”

The university board of trustees is leading a national search for the 29th president of the University of San Francisco to succeed Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., who stepped down Dec. 31 after 10 years of service.

Under Fr. Fitzgerald’s leadership, USF:

- Completed the largest campaign in USF history, raising $312 million for scholarships, academic programs, faculty, and facilities.

- Launched innovative programs and initiatives, including the Honors College, engineering major, and the Black Achievement Success and Engagement initiative.

- Enhanced campus life with projects like the Sobrato Center and Athletics Hall of Fame, Lone Mountain East residence hall, and the forthcoming Health and Life Sciences Campus.

- Grew the university’s endowment from $300 million to $600 million.

"Fr. Fitzgerald’s vision extended beyond academics and campus improvements. He led USF through the pandemic with resilience, expanded student support services, and championed equity and inclusion, raising USF’s national profile in rankings and reputation." - Jack Boland '78, Chair, USF Board of Trustees

Laura Euphrat ʼ89 co-founded the non-profit Little Wishes in 2003 to help brighten the days of children experiencing hospital care. The organization has granted over 30,000 wishes and works with 39 hospitals nationwide.

“These wishes bring moments of hope, comfort, and joy to seriously ill, hospitalized children, granting them the power to choose a wish that brings them light during some of their toughest days. It also brings much-needed levity and joy to the caregivers who get to deliver the wishes,” she said.

A graduate of the School of Nursing and Health Professions and a pediatric oncology nurse, Euphrat credits her time at USF in laying the foundation for Little Wishes.

Euphrat’s work and the Little Wishes organization serve as a reminder that USF alumni can change the world from wherever they are.

This morning, USF student-athlete Reid Roberts was selected with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2025 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Selected by the San Jose Earthquakes, Roberts is a three-time All-WCC honoree and the highest-ever draft pick from USF.

As a team captain, Roberts guided the Dons to five shutouts this year, including the team's second straight win over a top-10 Stanford team.

"Reid is a natural leader and a top student in the classroom. With all of his accomplishments, I am most proud of his character and how he has conducted himself in these three years on the Hilltop. He has set the standard for our program and is a great role model for our younger players. From his freshman year to the end of his junior season, he has developed into the best left sided defender in the country." - Head Coach Chris Brown

Last week, San Francisco honored Joe Rosenthal ’43 by naming a street after him, recognizing him for taking the iconic photo of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. As the 80th anniversary of the photo approaches, the December issue of USF Magazine features Rosenthal's story.

Meet The Man Behind the Camera: https://bit.ly/41BcmFi

An excerpt:

On Feb. 19, 1945, Joe Rosenthal waded ashore with a battalion of Marines in the attack on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Instead of a rifle, he carried a camera above his head.

The sea was choppy, and it was hard running in the sand, he recalled. Gunfire and grenades pelted the beach. Two Marines were hit and dropped dead next to him and another ran past him.

“It was like walking through the rain and not getting wet,” Rosenthal said later, describing the battle scene. “No man who survived that beach can tell you how he did it.”

Rosenthal was a long way from San Francisco and USF, where he was a student until 1943. Like so many others, he left the university hoping to become a soldier after the U.S. entered World War II. But he was turned away because of poor eyesight.

Instead, he did a short stint with the United States Maritime Service before becoming a war photographer for the Associated Press. He had some experience, having worked as a photographer for the AP while he was a USF student.

Four days after landing on Iwo Jima, Rosenthal took a photo of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a large American flag at the top of Mount Suribachi, marking the United States’ takeover of the island.

The photo went on to be one of the most famous images in history. Next year, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima and Rosenthal’s photo.
