UCSF Memory and Aging Center The UCSF MAC cares for individuals with cognitive problems, researches neurodegenerative brain diseases, and educates people about diseases of aging.

For more than 20 years, the UCSF Memory and Aging Center has been providing model care for patients and their families, finding innovative ways to understand and hopefully cure these neurodegenerative diseases, and reaching out to the wider community to raise awareness about these diseases of aging. Our multidisciplinary team is made up of neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists, speech

pathologists, genetic counselors, nurses, pharmacologists, social workers, research coordinators, technologists and administrators. The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It is the only campus in the 10-campus UC system dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. The UCSF Department of Neurology strives to deliver superb patient care, research the causes of and treatments for human nervous system disorders, and educate health care providers and the broader community about aging and neurodegenerative disease. The Memory and Aging Center is housed within the UCSF School of Medicine Department of Neurology.

“Unlike typical clinical trials, platform trials can remain open with multiple new therapies tested in successive cycles if the first ones don’t work,” said Adam Boxer, MD, PhD, endowed professor in memory and aging at the UCSF Department of Neurology, as well as a principal investigator in the trial. “This means there are more opportunities to identify effective treatments in a faster timeframe, with lower cost and less burden to participants. Patients on the PSP trial will have a 75% chance of treatment with an active drug and after one year, all participants will have the opportunity to receive a drug.”

"Even if we slow the progression of the disease by 20%, 30%, that’s a meaningful impact on a condition with relentless progression and no cure.”
—Julio Rojas, MD, PhD
Principal investigator of the trial

A clinical trial that will test three drugs concurrently, and could include more, represents new hope for patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that usually kills within seven years after symptoms start.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease that is often not diagnosed during life or mistaken for Parkinson’s disease. UCSF Memory and Aging Center physician-scientists and co-authors Julio Rojas, MD, PhD, and Adam Boxer, MD, PhD, have found a specific pattern of protein biomarkers that help make an earlier and more accurate diagnosis – essential for clinical trials and potential treatments.

Scientists have identified the biomarkers in progressive supranuclear palsy, a type of frontotemporal dementia, the most common dementia affecting people under 60.

A recent study led by UC San Francisco's Memory and Aging Center has shown promising results using a smartphone app to detect early signs of FTD in individuals who were genetically predisposed to get it. The app's cognitive tests were found to be as sensitive as in-person evaluations, offering hope for earlier diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Learn more about this innovative approach in the study published in JAMA Network Open.

A smartphone app could enable greater participation in clinical trials for people with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a devastating neurological disorder that often manifests in mid-life.
