While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, the news didn’t reach Galveston, Texas until two years later, thus starting the celebration of . Our library owns an original pocket proclamation that was specifically printed by John Murray Forbes to be carried by Union soldiers to distribute to the formerly enslaved. The Sutro Library (the State Library’s San Francisco branch) holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830–1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries as well as one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.
