The world in which we live is indelibly marked by global processes – from the interconnectedness of business and finance to ethnic struggles for self-determination. The University of San Francisco offers a unique master’s degree in international studies – an innovative and rigorous program that provides students with an in-depth knowledge of the changes that now face the global community and with

the practical tools they need to make change happen. Courses in the Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) focus on development and the environment, political and economic aspects of globalization, human rights, peace and conflict, and international law and organizations. As an interdisciplinary program, students integrate and apply knowledge across disciplines in order to analyze global issues and problems. MAIS students acquire the skills needed for a wide variety of professions and fields, including international affairs, foreign service, intelligence and international organizations. Our graduates are also prepared to pursue further studies in a Ph.D.

We cannot ignore the recent escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. We are sharing two articles written by our esteemed faculty member, Prof. Stephen Zunes, for The Progressive Magazine. The first article delves into the Hamas attack on October 7th, Israel's subsequent military response, and provides a concise historical overview of the region. The second article explores the political implications within the United States. You can find the links to these articles in our bio. Our hearts go out to all those who are suffering and grieving.

🇫🇷 Today, we shine our MAIS spotlight on Olivia Alexandre! Olivia is a proud member of the Class of 2024 and a dedicated athlete on USF's track team.🏃‍♀️ Originally from France, her heart beats for raclette and the enchanting city of Paris. 🧀 Her idea of a perfect afternoon involves savoring a coffee on a charming Parisian terrace while observing the world pass by or playing sports outside with friends. ☕️ Whenever she feels a touch of homesickness, a call to her brother is the perfect remedy. Quel plaisir de t'avoir parmi nous, Olivia! 🫶

❗Welcome next Wednesday to the International Studies Fall 2023 Colloquium!

🔬Learn how experts, governments, and nonprofits have used certain measurement tools and data to make sense of global mercury pollution.

📈Despite the vast uncertainty in data about ASGM's and other sectors' contribution to the problem, these seemingly mundane quantification technologies, like spreadsheets and pollution rankings, help render it legible for global audiences, but also influence who gets blamed and who is responsible for solving it.

🇨🇴Using Colombia as a case study (it's one of the top mercury emitters), the talk explores how these ordinary quantification practices shape our view of the mercury problem and its potential solutions.

Welcome, Talia! Get to know her below ⬇️

“I was born and raised in Steilacoom, Washington. Upon graduating from Steilacoom High School with my diploma as well as my Associates Degree, I went to Washington State University to pursue academics as well as my rowing career. I graduated with a bachelors degree in political science and minored in global studies in 2021 and went on to be heavily involved in child care, taking care of children both in a nannying capacity as well as a preschool teacher. In 2022, I was committed to returning to school to obtain my Masters in Education for Elementary School Education however global events inspired me to instead switch gears and turn to international studies with a focus on Global Governance and Justice. In my free time I love hiking, running, am an avid reader, and I love doing puzzles. I’m so excited to be on this journey with friends who I can already tell I will know for a lifetime.”

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Amir Kamel, who shared his insights on his book, "Floundering Stability: US Foreign Policy in Egypt." 🇺🇸🇪🇬

The talk explored the US ability to influence stability through foreign policy tools. This was accomplished by examining the foundations of this particular US foreign policy, how it evolved over time, and how it performed in the context of USA-Egypt ties. A set of foreign policy reflections were then drawn out from this account.

And of course, we couldn't let Dr. Kamel return home without a little token of our appreciation! Swipe for a peek! ➡️

Welcome, Arturo! Get to know him below ⬇️

"My name is Arturo and I was born and raised in San Francisco. In short: I am a proud Chicano born in la Misión, raised in the southeast side of the City, and an activist in Chinatown. I received my undergrad education at SJSU, worked as an Academic Advisor at College Track San Francisco, and after that I was a Bilingual Educator-in-Training at the California Academy of Sciences
I joined MAIS because I want to solve poverty all around the world. I witnessed how poverty affected the lives of folks around my community. Poverty is either a barrier that prevents folks from moving forward in life or a huge weight on our shoulders that slows down our success. I believe that every person regardless of their station in life should have an equal opportunity to succeed."

Welcome, Aryana! Get to know her below ⬇️

”My name is Aryana Kazimi. I graduated from University of San Francisco with my B.A in Politics. I had an amazing experience at USF and became knowledgeable in different aspects of politics. After I graduated from college, I worked for the state as a staff services analyst. After some time of working with the state, I realized I wanted to further educate myself and push my career more towards global policy. Overall, I genuinely felt that the professors at University of San Francisco were beyond helpful and were there to help every student. I made great connections and loved the campus in general. I chose to go back to USF because I wanted to dedicate myself and stay loyal to the University of San Francisco. I chose the MAIS program due
to my interest in politics, but wanted to learn a different perspective of governance. I am so excited and happy that I will accomplish my masters sooner than later.”
