Since its founding in 1988, the University of San Francisco's Center for Asia Pacific Studies (formerly the Center for the Pacific Rim) has been a leader in bridging the Pacific through programs that promote understanding, cooperation, and cultural exchange. Through is research, teaching, publications, and public, programs, the center holds a unique and important position as San Francisco's academic gateway to the Asia Pacific.

The Center for Asia Pacific Studies is excited to host Curtis Chin for a talk inspired by his memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. In this candid and compelling book, Chin shares his story about growing up Asian in Detroit and coming out to his working-class immigrant family, all set against the Reagan Revolution, the AIDS crisis, and his family’s beloved Chinese restaurant.

Explore the history and debate of birthright citizenship 🇺🇸

Join the USF Center for Asia Pacific Studies for a timely lecture with Bill Ong Hing as he explores the history and ongoing debate around birthright citizenship.

In this talk, Prof. Hing will explore the origins and evolution of birthright citizenship in the United States, examining its impact on national identity, immigration policy, and civil rights. He will address current challenges under the Trump administration, delve into the legal and political debates, and consider whether the Supreme Court will uphold its 1898 decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, a landmark case that affirmed birthright citizenship as a constitutional right.
