Today, we celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day ๐Ÿ™†

It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. Since those early years, International Womenโ€™s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹

Purple, green and white are the colors of International Womenโ€™s Day. Purple signifies justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Green symbolizes hope and white represents purity.

In countries like Mexico, International Womenโ€™s Day is known as a nationwide movement, where all women march. They commemorate a date that does not give Mexican women equality to fight for their rights. March 8th is a day to protest.

We stand with all the Women, Trans Women and Non-Binary people and Celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day here at San Francisco State University. โœŠ๐Ÿ’œ

March is Womenโ€™s History Month ๐Ÿ‘ฉโœŠ

Why do we celebrate womenโ€™s history month?

During Womenโ€™s History Month, we celebrate the courageous women who have helped our Nation build a fairer, more just society. Throughout history, the vision and achievements of powerful women have strengthened our Nation and opened the doors of opportunity wider for all of us. ๐Ÿ’œ

On this post, weโ€™re highlighting some influential women:

Selena Quintanilla: Selena Quintanilla-Pรฉrez, known mononymously as Selena, was an American singer. Referred to as the โ€œQueen of Tejano Musicโ€

Destinyโ€™s Child: Destinyโ€™s Child was an American musical girl group whose final line-up comprised Beyoncรฉ Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.

Anna May Wong: Wong Liu Tsong, known professionally as Anna May Wong, was an American actress, considered the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition.

Malala Yousafzai: Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate at the age of 17.

This month, we celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

We encourage gators to support black owned businesses and restaurants and to also attend local Black History Month events in the city and on campus.

Happy Black History Month Gators! ๐ŸŠ
