Residential Life Fall 2023 Highlights! 🏠🐊

Residential Life at SF State is an on-campus living community that houses SF State students, faculty, and community members. Spanning five diverse communities. Residential Life serves about 4,500 bed space residents. Residential Life is the largest department within the Division of Student Life & Dean of Students unit and employs 32 professional staff members, 115 live-in student leaders, and over 100 community desk assistants. Residential Life continually works to promote a sense of community among residents and enhance learning beyond the classroom. 💜

The SAFE Place Fall 2023 highlights!🐊🍂

The SAFE Place is a survivor-focused, trauma-informed program that provides FREE and CONFIDENTIAL support services to survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual harassment (sexual violence) while working with campus partners to end sexual violence. We serve all members of the SFSU community including students, staff, and faculty. Stop by SSB 403 or contact [email protected] to schedule an appointment or to meet if immediate services are needed.

Today, we celebrate International Women’s Day 🙆

It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. 🗺️🙋

Purple, green and white are the colors of International Women’s Day. Purple signifies justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Green symbolizes hope and white represents purity.

In countries like Mexico, International Women’s Day is known as a nationwide movement, where all women march. They commemorate a date that does not give Mexican women equality to fight for their rights. March 8th is a day to protest.

We stand with all the Women, Trans Women and Non-Binary people and Celebrate International Women’s Day here at San Francisco State University. ✊💜

March is Women’s History Month 👩✊

Why do we celebrate women’s history month?

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the courageous women who have helped our Nation build a fairer, more just society. Throughout history, the vision and achievements of powerful women have strengthened our Nation and opened the doors of opportunity wider for all of us. 💜

On this post, we’re highlighting some influential women:

Selena Quintanilla: Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known mononymously as Selena, was an American singer. Referred to as the “Queen of Tejano Music”

Destiny’s Child: Destiny’s Child was an American musical girl group whose final line-up comprised Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.

Anna May Wong: Wong Liu Tsong, known professionally as Anna May Wong, was an American actress, considered the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition.

Malala Yousafzai: Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate at the age of 17.

This month, we celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

We encourage gators to support black owned businesses and restaurants and to also attend local Black History Month events in the city and on campus.

Help us give a warm welcome to our new Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, Dean Miguel Hernández!🐊💜
 
Dean Miguel is a native of Puerto Rico. As a first-generation college graduate, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Columbus State University and a Master of Arts from Appalachian State University. He completed his doctorate in Higher Education at Florida State University in 2020. His research agenda focused on DACA college students who engaged in social activism.
 
Dean Miguel enjoys tea, coffee, driving, listening to music, watching movies, engaging in community service and hanging out at the beach. He is regularly inspired by his nieces and nephews and wants to be their favorite uncle! Dean Miguel is motivated to partner with students and staff to create a strong sense of belonging and support all at SF State.
