Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans, founded on Tuesday, December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in The United States of America. These visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of th
e fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Gamma Chi Lambda Graduate Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, is in San Francisco, California. Since its charter on Saturday, September 20, 1947, our distinguished brotherhood has pushed forth our dear fraternity's goals, aims, and programs, including Brother's Keeper, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People (VPHP), Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College, and Project Alpha. We also have the privilege of mentoring and professionally developing our two local college chapters: Xi Rho at San Francisco State University, chartered in 1980, and Upsilon Rho at The University of San Francisco, chartered in 2014.
