Are you interested in learning more about the LGBTQ+ history of San Francisco? We recommend SFSU Emeritus professor Nan Alamilla Boyd’s “Wide Open Town: A History of Q***r San Francisco to 1965,” which examines how over time our city developed its reputation as a haven for the q***r community.

Welcome to the JPLL!

The J. Paul Leonard Library (JPLL) at San Francisco State University is located at 1630 Holloway Ave and occupies the Ground through 4th Floors of the Library Building. At JPLL, you can: - borrow laptops and other tech equipment - use library computer labs - print, copy, scan - check out textbooks placed on Reserve for classes - get research help - find place to study and collaborate on projects - reserve private study rooms - use the Digital Media Studio & MakerSpace - get the materials that you need through InterLibrary Loan - enjoy beverages or light snacks from Peets Coffee located in the 1st Floor lobby area - and much, much more! In general, the lower floors are busier and noisier and more appropriate for groups, while the upper floors are quieter and better suited for individuals looking for a more peaceful study environment. The 5th and 6th Floors house the Sutro Library, part of the California State Library. The JPLL also is home to the Labor Archives and Research Center (LARC) and the Special Collections & Archives, both located on the 4th Floor. The mission of the J. Paul Leonard Library is to empower its University constituency with lifelong learning skills to identify, find, evaluate, use and communicate information in promotion of excellence in scholarship, knowledge and understanding.
