We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Karen Chesna, Online Coordinator for the School of Jewelry & Metal Arts.

Karen’s kind spirit and presence will be greatly missed. Joining the University in 2016, Karen was a valued and longstanding faculty member. Karen graduated from Academy of Art University with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2010 and was one of the first Online MFA FASCU students. Her passionate engagement in the Academy’s program was an inspiration.

Those who worked closely with Karen have shared that they were, “always struck by her compassion, empathy, and dedication to her students and craft. She loved creating things and sharing the process with her colleagues and students, reminding us of what a joy it is to be an artist and how fortunate we are to work in a field that values creativity. Karen balanced the high standards required to be successful with good nature and positivity, beautifully melding the best traits of a supportive and kind Instructor. An incredible teacher and artist, coming from a place of both compassion and intelligence, she made an enormous difference in the online experience for both teachers and students.”

We offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. ❤️

Student Spotlight: Jingru Feng
Jewelry & Metal Arts / MFA

My educational experience is a little more special than that of ordinary students. I started to learn to draw when I was in junior high school, and I continued to learn to draw and draw until I was in high school. That's when my parents started suggesting that I go to Italy to study art, and I was accepted to the Italian Academy of Fine Arts. But because I don't know Italian, I refused to go to Italy to learn painting. And I took the college entrance examination in China, because there are very few schools in China that specialize in jewelry design, so I can only choose visual communication design. But I didn't like this major, so I chose to drop out to study in the UK after two months of study.

While studying in the UK I found that education is different in every school in every country and I became interested in the direction of the American way of education. So I chose to come to the United States as a graduate student. I think I have found my future direction. In the future, I want to continue to study for a Ph.D. and return to mainland China to become a university jewelry design teacher after graduation. Since I have been educated in three different countries: China, the UK and the US, I find this educational experience invaluable. I'd like to share what I've learned from this, and I'd like to help some future aspiring jewelry designers with some good guidance.

For School of Jewelry & Metal Arts MFA alumna Azita Mireshghi, jewelry-making is an opportunity to convey an emotion or sensation. Her series, “Sublimation,” is inspired by her experiences with anxiety, and it explores how certain textures and repetitive actions can ease negative emotions. With a focus on various textures, ranging from metal studs to hammered bronze, her pieces evoke both empowering and soothing feelings she experienced while creating them.

“I’ve always been fascinated with texture, and in order to create these textures, I end up making a lot of repetitive movements, which can actually ease feelings of nervousness,” explained Mireshghi. “When you feel anxious, working with your hands can really help. I’m creating these pieces where you can almost see the anxiety on the piece, but it also has that textural, tactile element to where it could be soothing to the wearer to touch and interact with it.”

Azita Mireshghi’s work provides both an empowering and soothing experience through its materials, conveying the artist’s passion for texture
