Join us in celebrating “Works on Paper” a solo exhibition featuring works by Baltimore-based artist Ann Margaret Morris. The exhibition will be on view January 13 - March 1 with an opening reception on Monday, February 3 between 4 PM and 6 PM.

Exhibition statement:

This exhibition showcases large-scale, Realist drawings that immerse viewers in the quiet force of the natural life cycle. The works explore themes of patience, mastery, and the human experience in our environment, capturing profound moments of growth, decay, and renewal. Through meticulous detail and scale, the artist’s drawings evoke an emotional resonance, inviting reflection on the slow, transformative processes of nature and the deep connections between time, effort, and life. These pieces remind us of the power of stillness and observation in understanding both the natural world and our own emotional landscapes.

Bio:
Ann Margaret Morris grew up in rural Pennsylvania and lives currently in Baltimore City. Her work consists of large-scale charcoal drawings on paper. She holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and has recently completed the Extended Residency Program at Center Arts and Studios. For the last 13 years she has worked in oncology research for the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She would love to talk to you about pencil sharpeners.

Join us for the opening reception of Terraform - an exhibition featuring artwork by Elise Thompson and Lucia Riffel - taking place on Monday, October 28 from 7 PM to 9 PM.
The exhibition is on view October 28 - December 29th @ Phaze 2 Gallery. Gallery hours of Monday - Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM.

Exhibition Statement: Terraform
Now, more than ever, and ever, and ever, the future is happening around us, to us, and In spite of us; because of us. We stand at the edge of what remains, building microsystems to make sense of a world spinning out of control. Hiding in the shadows, finding solace in the dazzling array. Hoping the stars will wink at us to signal, “Keep going.” So, we do what we can, slowly and steadfastly. We traverse a changing landscape through color, form, and perceptual space. Fitting our mouths, teeth, and eyes around what order we can craft to gain some semblance or illusion of respite.
Painting, sculpture, and digital media offer a means of retrofitting the current onto the unknown new. To come to terms with what is, and find a place, for a moment, of relief to ensure we can keep moving. Tight lipped and smiling - into the void - waiting for it to smile back. Do you see me? Will you smile back? Because I will

Check out Joan Bontempo's Solo Exhibition - Alleys and Artifacts on View @ Phaze 2 Gallery. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday from 4pm to 7pm.

Eclectic in theme, my clay/ mixed media pieces draw from appreciations of archetypes and mythologies, of color, and movement in a dimensional medium - all inspired by the arts of
the ancients as well as in contemporary markings shouting, We Were Here.

In art, old becomes new again in every era, sometimes through
subtle reference, other times overt reinterpretations. And, be it the texture of a weathered surface, damaged images in paint on a wall, or carved gestures into stone, the presence and existence of our artistic activities, our spiritual musings - ultimately our lives, are evidenced by what we leave behind, from footprints to legacy.

This exhibit presents figurative works referencing icons of defenders or prophets; traditional vessel forms rendered with colorful, textured, casual twists; and a series of
abstract works integrating surface, time and place in canvases and mixed media constructions. They are inspired by passages, entrances and partitions. They are collected memories enhanced with the colors and textures of use and time. I am grateful to the back alleys, scribbled graffiti or abandoned structures that spoke to me from Detroit to Beijing, Palermo to San Juan, and New York to the Yucatan.

Artist Statement: My work in clay developed from an instant fascination with the medium of clay, and my earliest academic intentions were to master traditional, functional forms and techniques.

Those traditions seemed to come easily, and the lure of “what if I...?” quickly replaced the goal of conformity. Tradition became tools as I experimented in clay combined with other materials or found objects, including glass, altered canvases, metal screen and handmade paper.

I always work in series – challenging myself to develop, expand reimagine my former works with a different perspective on material and form. There is continuity in my materials and my aesthetic – I am drawn to what has been re-appropriated through time and use – weathered but not beaten - a now unrefined testament to the recent past.

A new series often begins from a photograph of a place I walked – an empty alley in a rural neighborhood with worn wood structures, a crumbling and peeling façade in a city block, vivid layers of text scribbled to claim a space, a historic building still in use on ancient land, shored up by whatever was at hand.... that was the inspiration for the works in this exhibit.

Each completed work inspires the next to be different: softer, or bolder or challenges me in the making. Usually, a series comes to an end after about 8 – 10 works. I keep the finished works in view around me until I feel I have addressed what I wanted to say, or the story I wanted to tell.

Our histories are not only written through language but even more importantly inscribed, collected and gathered through objects, dwellings and places we encounter.
