Great to share our projects with the campus community and public at our #openhouse today. #labday #publicarchaeology

The new lab’s open house was a success! Here are some highlights ✨
Excited to be in our new lab! Today we're analyzing ground stone tools from North Point State Park and inventorying artifacts from the Travis Plantation with our NPS partners! #communityarchaeology #towsonuniversity #labwork
Today was the last day of our 2024 field school. We filled our swimming pool units back in and grabbed our last blackberries of the summer. We had a great batch of students this year and can’t wait to see what you’ll do next! #schoolsoutforsummer #backfilling #goodbyesarenotforever
Well, things got a little damp this afternoon. A big thanks to everyone who braved the heat, and then everyone who braved the deluge to work with us today. We had a blast sharing the day with you. #communityarchaeology #rainday #cooloff #bailingwater
Community Archaeology in North Point State Park TODAY!
We’re here til 2:00 today! Come join us!
Fieldwork in a nonstop heatwave makes things tough. Luckily, our daily ritual of raiding the blackberry bushes before leaving for the day means everyone leaves happy, no matter how hard the day was. #heatwave #fieldschool #archaeology #blackberries
On days when it’s this hot, we spend the morning in the field and the afternoon at our field lab at the North Point State Park visitor center, washing artifacts. There’s AC and we get to review all the cool stuff we’ve found! #staycool #heatwave #heatsafety #archaeology #fieldschool
Excavating our first features this week! Features are “non-portable artifacts,” things like house floors, storage and trash pits, and hearths. They usually show up as stains in the soil. Right now we’re excavating two hearths, visible as burned soil and concentrations of charcoal. Based on the artifacts from the site, these features likely date to between 7000-1250 BC. #archaeology #fieldschool #hotsummer #trowel #fieldwork #oldstuff
Our crew had a hard day shovel testing to determine if there are any buried layers in our newly documented site (there are!). Luckily, we were rewarded at the end of the day with ripe wine berries! #fieldschool #archaeology #soilscience #stratigraphy #wildberries #snacktime
On our last day of pedestrian survey for the summer, we found two pieces of galena from two different locations in a newly documented site. Galena is a lead sulfide mineral. The closest archaeologically documented source of galena to Baltimore is in New York! Native people traded long distances for galena and seem to have valued it for non-utilitarian reasons. #minerals #archaeology #coolfinds #fieldschool
