Our office and programs will be closed tomorrow in honor of Juneteenth, Freedom Day! We are so grateful to those ancestors who worked to make Juneteenth happen and may we continue to fight for freedom until Americans of all races and creeds achieve equality!

Good news—we're now extending our registration period! Instead of the usual 3-day registration period in September, we're opening up our registration form through the summer and into early Fall. This means you can register your team for the Battle of the Books as early as today! The last day to register will be Friday, September 19th at 6:00 PM EST.

Book list
Please make sure to order the books ahead of time so they’re ready to hand out to students on Monday, September 22nd—our official book distribution day.

To get a copy of the book list, just send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll be happy to share it with you. That said, the list needs to stay confidential until distribution day, and books cannot be shared with teams before then. Everyone will need to sign a confidentiality agreement before receiving the list.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the book list, please contact me directly.

I'll be in touch in the Fall when Battle of the Books starts up again, but until then, have a fantastic summer break!

JUNE 4 - 8

Dear Disability Community, Friends, and Allies:

The Federal Budget Reconciliation process is underway in Congress. At this time, the budget is expected to include massive cuts to disability programs including:

Medicaid (HUSKY health care, services for people with disabilities and older adults, mental health, personal assistance services)
SNAP (Food Stamps) and TANF Cash Assistance
TITLE V - HealthCare for Children with Special HealthCare Needs
Independent Living Services
SAMHSA Mental Health Programs
Social Services Block Grant including mental health, case management, transitional living services
Council on Developmental Disabilities
UCEDD/LEND program
Disability Rights Connecticut
Parent Training and Information Centers (CPAC)

All of these programs support the health and well-being of persons with disabilities, vulnerable children and their families, older adults and their family and kinship caregivers.
A coalition of disability organizations, providers and individuals with disabilities and family members is hosting a one-hour call at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 7 to discuss the impact of all these cuts.

Invited attendees include our Congressional delegation and Senators, State elected officials, representatives, and senators as well as state agency officials.

In addition to an overview of the impact of these cuts on our various services, stories from some providers and recipients of services will be shared. This is intended to be an informational session to present the potential impact of these cuts and begin to mobilize as a large disability coalition to address these issues.
