Hillsdale In DC

Hillsdale In DC The Kirby Center is an extension of the mission of Hillsdale College to Washington, D.C. The Allan P. Kirby, Jr. It continues in that cause today.

Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship is an extension of the teaching mission of Hillsdale College to Washington, D.C. Its purpose is to teach the Constitution and the principles that give it meaning. Through the study of original source documents from American history—and of older books that formed the education of America's founders—the Center will seek to inspire students, teachers,

citizens, and policymakers to return the Constitution to its central place in the political life of the nation. The model for such work can be seen both in the example of America's Founders and in the example of those who have sought most effectively to undo their work. Both began their work in learning, and both spread their message by teaching. Both looked to education, and the kind of statesmanship it inspires, to make their gaines long lasting. America's founders emphasized a citizen education that centered on an understanding of natural rights, and thus of the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The Progressives, beginning in the nineteenth century, believed that those principles were outmoded. Consequently, they placed their emphasis on educating experts who could manage citizens' lives better—or so they supposed—than citizens could themselves. With progressivism ascendant in education, unfamiliarity with America's founding principles is now a problem, especially among those who lead our nation. The urgent task, then, is simply to recover knowledge that is lost. Accomplishing that, the propositions advanced by both the Founders and the Progressives are testable by reason and can be compared with real facts in the world. Abraham Lincoln called for a "return to the fountain whose waters spring close by the blood of the Revolution." Hillsdale College was very much enrolled in the cause of Lincoln in his day.

JMF SPOTLIGHT: Ted Ellis, ’24, is the Vice President for Government Affairs at the Center for Industrial Progress.

He shares, “The Madison Fellowship has really helped me reflect on the American Founding. Understanding just how much work needs to be done to restore America to timeless ideals of the Framers has encouraged me to be a bolder advocate for change. At the same time, it has also challenged me to think prudentially about which reforms matter most to pursue.

“I’ve been involved in a number of programs that are similar in their aims, but the Madison Fellowship is a truly special experience. The other fellows are first-rate, and so are the Hillsdale faculty. But the quality of the discussions is a true cut above—intense, respectful, discerning, and honest—the kind of thing that could last, and often does, long after the evening formally concludes. I have no doubt my fellow participants will go on to do great things.”

The James Madison Fellowship (JMF) has applications open now for the 2024-2025 class! Apply here by July 8: https://dc.hillsdale.edu/Madison-Fellows/How-to-Apply/

Today, we honor our fellow countrymen who have given “the last full measure of devotion” in defense of America and the American way of life. In this video, the Hillsdale College Choir sings “Mansions of the Lord,” with lyrics written by Randall Wallace for his 2002 film “We Were Soldiers.”

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and held that title for more than 100 years (1868-1970). The holiday was so named because of the tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. The decorating tradition continues to this day, as Americans gather in cemeteries across the nation to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

When Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, its purpose was to honor Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War. After World War I, however, the observance was broadened to include fallen soldiers from all major American wars.

Check out Faith and Law’s Friday Forum with our own Dr. Matthew Mehan, associate dean and professor at our Graduate School of Government.

How do we, as a people, hand down love from one generation to another? Is that the role of the law? What did previous generations know about this tradition of love and law that we today may have forgotten? Join Dr. Matthew Mehan for a reflection on possible answers to these and related questions drawn from revered foundational texts of the Americans who came before us. Such reflections may, perhaps, change how we make, uphold, and specially love the law.

What could be better for a professor of government like me than to bring Hillsdale’s unique teaching mission to the nation’s capital? I’m blessed to have highly motivated graduate students—working professionals hungry for the kind of knowledge of our nation’s ideals and institutions that only Hillsdale in D.C. is providing.”

LIVESTREAM | May 11, 2024, 2:00 p.m. ET | Watch Hillsdale College’s One Hundred and Seventy-Second Commencement. Pat Sajak, longtime host of Wheel of Fortune and Chairman of the College’s Board of Trustees, will address the Class of 2024 as Commencement speaker. https://livestream.hillsdale.edu/

Commencement is more than the conferral of a degree—it changes one’s status, publicly recognizes the change, and honors the achievement. Hillsdale College has celebrated commencement since its founding—in war and in peace, depression and pandemic. It will continue to do so, come what may.

STUDENT FEATURE | Meet Angela Swinson, the senior government relations coordinator at the Conservative Partnership Institute. Angela shares her experience at the Van Andel Graduate School of Government:

“When I first started the Hillsdale in D.C. program, I felt like I was in unfamiliar territory. I had a very basic understanding of philosophy and had not read much of the classic works of the major Western philosophers. I knew the facts of the Founding, but I never fully grasped what made it unique or why it made America so exceptional. With the help and encouragement of my professors, as I immersed myself in the coursework and discussions, I began to gain a deeper understanding of the material and of the principles that have shaped our nation’s history. The program not only expanded my knowledge of philosophy and political history but also challenged me to grow in my faith and to improve my ability to defend what I believe.”
