Join us as we celebrate the life and impact of Delta Sigma Theta's First Grand President Sadie T.M. Alexander.
Soror Alexander was the first Grand President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., serving from 1919 to 1923 as the official legal advisor to the Sorority. She was elected to the office of Grand President four times (the title that preceded National President).
Delta's growth under Grand President Alexanderâs auspices was phenomenal, with chapters established on college campuses in Cincinnati, Syracuse, Ithaca (NY), Berkeley (CA), Chicago, Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, and Lincoln (NE). Graduate chapters were authorized at the Second National Convention in 1920 when petitions from graduate sorors in New York City and Washington, D.C. were presented and approved. The Kappa Chapter was established at the University of California, making Delta the first Greek-letter organization for African American students (men or women) on the Pacific Coast. One of the chapter's charter members was Vivian Osborne Marsh, who would later become the seventh National President of Delta Sigma Theta.
Under Soror Alexanderâs leadership, May Week, established in 1921, is an annual remembrance by chapters nationwide highlighting the significance of higher education for African American women. The Delta, the official journal of the Sorority, was also created during her tenure. Soror Alexander was also a chartering member of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter.
The idea of establishing the Housing Fund, Sinking Fund, Scholarship Award Fund, and College Tuition Fund was conceived by President Alexander and voted upon at the Fourth National Convention in 1922.
On November 1, 1989, Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 91.

đș#DSTHeritageMoments: Celebrating the life and legacy of Gabrielle Lewis Pelham, one of the Sorority's first Honorary Members.
Soror Lewis Pelham was the first woman to receive a bachelorâs degree in music from Adrian College in Michigan; and the first person of color to hold a formal position in Michigan Stateâs Music Teacher Association.
Soror Lewis Pelham was an organizer and one of six African-American women to co-found The Detroit Study Club, a Black womenâs literary organization in Detroit, Michigan, dedicated to individual intellectual achievement and social betterment. In 1903, she became a founding board member and faculty member of the Washington Conservatory of Music, a music conservatory for Black students in Washington, D.C. From 1905 to 1907, she served as Howard Universityâs Director of Music and became a favorite accompanist on campus.
Soror Pelham Beckley was the wife of Robert Pelham, inventor, editor, and co-founder of the Detroit Plaindealer, an American newspaper that served the Black community. The Pelhams had four children - two boys and two girls. Both daughters were very proud and active members of the Sorority.
