Professor Guy Ziv recently appeared yesterday (at 6:25) on NPR’s AirTalk with Larry Mantle on LAist concerning the implications of the Israeli Supreme Court ruling on making military service compulsory for the ultra-Orthodox in Israel. We also discussed the rift between Netanyahu and the Israeli security establishment in this context.

Today on AirTalk, we dig into a new proposal that looks to expand the size of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors from five to nine members. Also on the show, we dive into the history of the iconic Valley Girl accent; listeners share their thoughts on President Biden remaining in the 2024 pr...

CIS Director Michael Brenner discussed the History of Zionism with historians Anita Shapira and Derek Penslar on NPR.

Since October 7th, the term Zionism has been everywhere in the news. It's been used to support Israel in what it calls its war against Hamas: a refrain to remind everyone why Israel exists and why it must be protected. Others have used Zionism to describe what they view as Israel's collective punish...

Today was the last day of classes before exams. Good luck, students! We were recalling a wonderful visit recently by a delegation of Israeli teens from a number of Jewish and Palestinian communities in Israel. The teens met in a lively discussion with students and faculty at AU, organized by Jewish and Israel Studies Professor Lauren Strauss. The teens have been engaged for several months in a writing project about their identities and were hosted in DC by Heart of a Nation.

Gorgeous day yesterday for our last spring Israeli politics discussion with SIS Professor Guy Ziv over falafel. Thanks to all who participated (some shown here) all year. These biweekly dialogue conversations covered issues such as the future of Israeli democracy, the judicial overhaul protests prior to Oct. 7, US-Israel relations, the trajectory of the Gaza War, and of course Iran’s recent attack on Israel. Not a quiet news year but lots of thoughtful discussion. Thank you Professor Ziv.
