✨ Why We Teach: Stories from American University 's College of Arts and Sciences Faculty ✨

At American University, teaching goes beyond the classroom—it’s about inspiring the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders. 💡 CAS professors are not only experts in their fields, but they’re also passionate educators who thrive on curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity.

Take it from History Professor Max Paul Friedman, who says the classroom is a “source of eternal youth—not for teachers, but for ideas.” Or Physics Professor Nathan Harshman, who loves the moment when students realize they’re his colleagues in exploring scientific knowledge.

Through mentorship, hands-on research, and meaningful discussions, these faculty members remind us of the power of education to spark curiosity and hope.

Check out their reflections and join the conversation! https://bit.ly/3OoRBVi

Atop the American University Bender Arena parking garage, approximately 80 students and faculty huddled together on November 12 for stargazing and hot chocolate, organized by the Physics department. Stargazers were able to see Jupiter (and three of its moons), Saturn (and three of its moons), and our Moon through the telescopes. Students were excited to see the various objects up close, with many of them looking through a telescope for the first time. The community spirit was palpable, and everyone is looking forward to an encore event.

🔬 American University Professor Alexander Zestos’s Brain Sensors Headed to Market 🔬

Professor Alexander Zestos, a bioanalytical chemist from our Department of Chemistry, has joined forces with Spike Neuro and the NIH to bring his advanced brain sensors to the marketplace. With the support of a $988,054 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, these tiny, hair-thin sensors are set to transform how we study the brain.

The sensors enable real-time monitoring of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, allowing researchers to delve deeper into critical neuroscience areas: drug effects on brain regions, the progression of conditions like dementia, and insights into addiction and mental health.

As Professor Zestos says, “Our understanding of the brain and nervous system is limited by the technologies currently available to study them, which is why novel tools and assays are needed and critical towards making groundbreaking discoveries in the field of neuroscience.”

👏 Join us in cheering on Professor Zestos and our College of Arts and Sciences researchers as they advance knowledge in neurotechnology and mental health! Read more: https://bit.ly/3CaG7lF
