Something I’ve come to learn throughout my time with GBP is that, sometimes, you have to try to understand more than you want to be understood. This link of understanding will help you better immerse yourself in your new host culture, be more conscious of the way you embrace and represent your own identity and culture in your host country, and expand your capacity for experiencing the life itself! @ Yangshuo,Guilin,China

"Whether in China or Ghana, I learned what it meant to be highly visible as I am white and an American abroad. From 'laowai' to 'obroni,' it was clear that I was a foreigner everywhere I went. I learned what my identity connotes in different cultures and how to handle the attention, whether positive or negative, that impacted my experience. Ghana is a beautiful country with incredibly welcoming people. I am so grateful for what I learned from the people I met there."

“It’s one thing to travel to a place for a few days or a few weeks. It’s another to actually live there. Before coming to Shanghai, I had only ever spent an extended period of time in two places: Boiling Springs, PA and Washington, DC. These places had both felt like home. I didn’t think I would ever feel that way about Shanghai. However, within a month of being here, I felt more comfortable than I did after spending a semester at GW. More than being comfortable, I feel free. I can book a weekend trip on a whim and just go. I can dye my hair blonde because why not? I can have a custom suit made and wear it to a fashion week party. This city has it all, and I’m sure I’ll find myself back here again, even if it’s just for Yang’s Dumplings.”

“China was never my number once choice for study abroad. I’m majoring in Latin American studies, so Asia was never on my academic radar. Living here changed all of that. China is unlike any place I’ve ever been and completely blew away my expectations. The language barrier doesn’t take away from the incredible places I’ve been able to go or the history that you can experience here. I’ve been hiking on sacred mountains, seen thousand year old artifacts, and become friends with people from all over the world. It’s weird to think that I wasn’t excited to come to China because now I can’t imagine leaving.”

“Two Shanghai subway cards (one to use, one for when I would eventually lose the first). Two for Milan, as well. A handful of coins from countries I forgot I was in. Faded scars on my legs from scratching my mosquito bites. The only A I’ve ever gotten on an economics paper. Stress dreams about whether my passport was in my backpack. Flights, visas, a short term apartment rental, applications, midnight skype calls, delays and cancellations and gates on the other side of the airport. A cohort of people going through the same thing in our unique ways. Opportunities and memories. So many memories. There are things that the Global Bachelor’s Program has given me that I’ve never dreamed of having. And now they are mine to keep.”

"Applying to GBP was undoubtedly the best decision I made at GW. I knew I wanted to study abroad, but I never thought I would have the chance to go three completely different destinations and become a local there. I will be forever grateful for the experiences, friends, and network it has given me."

“GBP really pushed me to explore places I’d never thought I’d go. Last semester I studied transition issues at CEU in Budapest and found myself traveling through former Yugoslavia, somewhere I never thought I’d be, where I learned a lot about some of major issues facing the region.”

Some things I’ve learned about Shanghai so far: Bikes. Are. Everywhere. Traffic culture is chaos. The variety in plant life is fascinating. I’ve never been to a more timely & efficient hospital. There is absolutely ZERO rhyme or rhythm to the way people walk in the streets.
But .. at least you know you’ve got something good going on in your home away from home when the only things you truly miss from home are blue skies and fresh air.
