Meet our Vice President and Event Coordinator, Gus Denneler! He is a Wichita native, graduating from WSU this semester with a major in Psychology, a minor in art and design, and an honors track in leadership.
Gus loves clay and ceramics because of the tactile feel, the process of making, and the infinite possibilities within the material. His interests, like hiking and exploring the world, inform his artistic process, so much of his work revolves around themes of nature and earthly or vibrant palettes. Gus wishes to create work which connects to individuals, whether from the aesthetic or functional, or because of a deep connection someone finds. Grab a piece of his work at our sale next week!

Meet our President and PR officer Madalyn Schrag! They are in their third year at WSU, and are double majoring in Social Work and Ceramics. One of the things she loves most about social work and ceramics is the community that surrounds both professions. Ceramic arts is one of the few art medias where community is needed in order to fully experience all that it has to offer, and they hope to reach out to the greater community through community arts engagement activities. Looking at all Maddie’s pieces, one can see that they like to experiment and have fun. She hopes to continue to share that creativity with others for years to come. Come check out their pieces next week at our annual spring sale!

Another recent trip of ours was to visit the We all loved seeing the different kinds of pottery and meeting all of the artists. We even took some time to visit the Crow Museum of Asian Art (included pictures of some real Jomon vessels for those who have taken the Sculptural Ceramics class), and the Nasher Sculpture Center before getting to know the artists of DPI a little better. Thank you to for welcoming us again this year! See you all next year!

Come support our student and faculty guild members at our 2nd Annual Ceramics Guild Valentine’s Day sale. This is a one day only sale, so make sure to come see us. Proceeds from our sale are split 50% for the guild to pay for visiting artists, supplies, and events - with the other 50% going directly to the artists.

You can also come paint a piece of pottery with the Ceramics Guild! Participants must reserve a spot online or at the event (as space permits). Fees include $15 per person per time slot, and $10-$40 for a piece to paint.
All materials will be provided. Paint-a-pot proceeds will go directly to guild members attending National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) this spring.

Both events will be held alongside the Ulrich Museum Makers & Masterpieces on February 14. We will be set up on the first floor of the McKnight Atrium. The sale will be from 10am-8pm. The Paint-a-Pot will be from 2pm-8pm. It is best to make a reservation to paint, as spaces will be limited.

Our current exhibition in the Polk/Wilson Gallery, Lesley Dill, Wilderness: Light Sizzles Around Me features a uniquely inspired group of sculptures and two-dimensional works more than a decade in the making. It represents the artists ongoing investigation into the significant voices and personas of America’s past.

In conjunction with Wilderness, we have three programs scheduled this week that will give a glimpse into what drives and inspires Dill, and how she creates her unique work.

* Artist Talk: On Thursday evening, November 16, join us for sips and snacks at 5:30 p.m. in the Beren Gallery, followed by an Artist Talk by Dill at 6 p.m. We'll learn more about the artist and Wilderness.
* Artist Dialogue: Friday, November 17 at 7 p.m., Lesley Dill and Beth Lipman invite us to a conversation about their work in Wooden Lecture Hall at Wichita Art Museum, 1400 Museum Blvd. Dill and Lipman have been creating works centering aspects of American life and culture for decades. Each artist uses representational and narrative imagery to investigate and mine specifics moments in US history.
* Film Screening: In Divide Light, filmmaker Ed Robbins documents the unique performance piece/opera, Divide Light, conceived and created by artist Lesley Dill with music composed by Richard Marriott. In this piece with lyrics inspired by Emily Dickinson, the singers wear lavish handmade costumes by Dill that transform during the performance. The piece is performed by the New Camerata Opera Company, with the Curiosity Cabinet Quintet. This free event takes place at the Emily Bonavia Tallgrass Film Center, 120 E. 1st. St., Unit #113. The film starts at 1 p.m., followed by a brief Q&A with Lesley Dill and Ed Robbins.

This exhibition is organized by the Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa and made possible by Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Ulrich is grateful for the ongoing support of Ulrich Friends with Benefits members who make the Museum’s exhibitions and programs possible through their UFWB memberships. We also receive funding for general operational support from the City of Wichita and Wichita State University.
