This week marked a historical milestone in Newman University's history, as the inaugural cohort of the Doctor of Business Administration program presented their dissertations on campus! This cohort (pictured first) will be the first-ever DBA graduates of Newman in May. 🥳

"Congratulations for being brave enough to start with us on this new program," President Kathleen Jagger, Ph.D., MPH, said to the DBA students over a celebratory dinner at Scotch & Sirloin in Wichita. "I know it's a long haul. It's one thing to go to college when you're supposed to be going to college at 18 or 24, and it's a quite different endeavor when you've got families, work, and all other volunteer activities you're engaged with in your community."

"This is a significant accomplishment," Vice President of Academic Affairs Alden Stout added. "For those of you going through this program, it demonstrates that you have a passion for lifelong learning. And that's one of the values that every faculty member who teaches students wants them to develop. This journey of lifelong learning doesn't stop when you finish this doctoral degree -- in fact, it empowers you to continue even further as you impact others. You will be powerful graduates in that regard."

While no singular event convinced Newman sophomore Max Masem to become a physician, his home environment certainly helped foster an interest.

“Growing up with a mom as a nursing professor and a science teacher dad, I was always pushed academically and fell in love with STEM,” Masem said.

Masem earned his certified nursing assistant license as a high school sophomore and worked in a nursing home. There, he enjoyed interacting with residents and witnessing the positive impacts he could have on others.

“I quickly knew that no matter what career I chose, I would be working in health care,” he said. “I asked myself, ‘In which ways can I utilize my skills and abilities to positively impact the most amount of people while finding value and worth in my career?’ I decided that being a physician would encompass everything I wanted in a career and allow me to feel fulfilled in my day-to-day life.”

Today, Masem works full time as a rehabilitation/mobility technician at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis.

Newman alumnus Yamir Lozada '12, '15 said his stepfather Mark Graber (Newman network administrator for the information technology department) taught him what a man needs to be like.

"Mark taught my mother, sister and I what a man and a father figure should be. From showing me the importance of how to treat a lady (my mother), and working hard for himself and family, to showing me how to tie a tie, how to drive and introducing me to my faith, it did not take long for me to call him ‘dad.’”

Lozada describes Graber as being “a champion” for him and his family since day one.

“He was and still is smart, kind, hilarious, hard-working, patient and loving to others,” Lozada said. “I can tell you that I was none of those things, at least not until I met my dad, Mark. Helping me find my faith was life-changing.”

Today, Lozada is a proud and patient father of two, a husband of 10 years and a humble leader to those around him.

“We are each other’s champion, and we are best friends,” Lozada said of Graber. “I would be nothing without him. I know Newman University loves all that Mark does, and I am so proud to call him my dad.”

Today, community members gathered to celebrate a Mass for Life in St. John's Chapel to pray for the unborn and for the end to abortion. Following Mass, a pro-life speaker shared her personal testimony on the importance of marching for life as part of a Campus Ministry event.

Next week, several Newman University students will march for the Kansas March & Rally for Life in Topeka, Kansas.

St. Newman and St. Maria De Mattias, pray for us!

St. John’s Chapel looks a little different as of late! The local Byzantine Catholic community has used the chapel to display six Catholic icons behind the altar. Each represents a significant figure in Catholicism – in particular Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints.

All are welcome to join us for a Divine Liturgy at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 to see the iconography up close and in person!

As instructor and clinical coordinator of the Radiologic Technology program, Sherry Ewing was surprised and brought to tears when she received a Teaching Excellence Award.

“It confirms that what I’m doing is working, that it’s getting through to the students and they appreciate it,” Ewing said.

Ewing started her role in the radiologic technology program in 2015 as a part-time faculty member and eventually transitioned to a full-time position.

“I was already working with students in the clinical setting as a technologist, so I was around students all the time,” she explained. “I went through this program myself. So I’ve been a student, I’ve been a tech. … so teaching in the program just kind of brings it full circle.”

The most rewarding aspect of teaching for Ewing is “when the lights are on.”

“That moment when all of this information you’ve been trying to get through to them finally all comes to fruition,” Ewing said. “They’re going into their fields and most of them have jobs lined up. Seeing where they start to where they are when they graduate … that’s what makes it rewarding.”

Congrats, Professor Ewing!

Student Juan Cordova certainly doesn’t shy away from hard work — a trait his parents instilled in him at an early age. He also worked in his parents’ restaurant in Ecuador from ages 13 to 18, which left a lasting impression.

“I grew up there,” he said. “For almost six years straight, I’d go to school, then soccer. After training I used to go home, take a shower and head to the restaurant for the night. I helped the dishwashers, kitchen servers, bartenders, cashiers, everything. I also played the drums in a band that performed there.”

His parents’ restaurant closed after COVID-19, but Cordova’s memories from his formative years began what he described as a borderline “obsession” to one day open an upscale restaurant. Cordova said he is drawn to the food- and guest-centered hospitable environment.

“When you go get fast food, you go because you’re hungry,” he said. “When you go to a high-end restaurant, you’re there for the experience. People want to try different wines, appetizers and entrées and might stay for two, sometimes three hours. When I go to the table to check that everything is okay, to ask them questions and have a conversation with them. That’s amazing for me. That’s what I want to do.”

In collaboration with other Kansas colleges, Newman's Educate the State program aims to make teacher education more affordable and accessible — particularly in education deserts. The program allows students to complete an associate’s degree at Butler or Cowley, then transfer to Newman, Friends or Southwestern to pursue a bachelor’s degree in secondary education.

“We are desperate for teachers. … This opportunity expands the availability for our graduates to become teachers who believe in their faith, live their faith, love their faith," superintendent for Catholic Schools in Wichita Janet Eaton said.
